QSSR is Sony’s new AI-guided upscaling option for standard PS5, and its first supported games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony says it improves image detail and stability. A secondary report of Digital Foundry’s testing in Marvel’s Wolverine describes clearer fine details than Insomniac’s temporal upscaler, but also a higher performance cost. No numerical image-quality or frame-rate results have been published in the sources cited here.
What QSSR is and how it works
QSSR, or Quick Spectral Super Resolution, is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-guided upscaling library for standard PS5. Upscaling reconstructs an output image from a lower-resolution rendered image, helping a game present a sharper-looking result without rendering every output pixel natively.
Sony says QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. The company describes two implementation changes: a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to make the technology perform well on PS5. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement presents QSSR as a new performance tier for the console, while positioning PSSR as the gold-standard upscaler for PS5 Pro. Sony’s announcement
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two first titles and said both were patched on October 1, 2026 to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option:
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- Marvel’s Wolverine
- Ghost of Yōtei
That means QSSR is a game-level option, not a system setting that automatically changes every PS5 game. Sony says it plans to make the library broadly available to PlayStation developers, but has not announced a title-by-title future rollout or confirmed support for other upcoming games.
Does QSSR improve image quality on standard PS5?
Sony says QSSR brings notable improvements to image detail and stability. The studio representatives quoted in the announcement describe those benefits in their own games. Mike Fitzgerald, Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology, said: “QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey.” Jasmin Patry, Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer, said QSSR resolves fine detail in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developer statements published by Sony, rather than independent benchmark results. Sony’s announcement

For a more direct comparison, Tech4Gamers summarizes Digital Foundry’s analysis of Marvel’s Wolverine as finding more visible detail with QSSR in distant objects, foliage, character hair, water, and reflections than with Insomniac’s temporal upscaler, identified in that report as IGTI. The report also says QSSR removes ghosting visible in its water comparison. These are observations attributed to that game analysis, not a quantified result or a guarantee that every scene or game will show the same improvement. The same Tech4Gamers report says QSSR carries a greater performance cost than Insomniac’s temporal solution. It does not give a measured frame-rate or latency penalty, so the size of that cost is not established. Sony’s announcement likewise provides no QSSR figures for frame rate, output resolution, latency, or image-quality benchmarks.

In practice, QSSR is an option for a game’s graphics settings, so players can compare the available modes in a supported title and choose the balance they prefer. The available evidence does not establish a universal best setting or quantify how the trade-off changes across scenes.

QSSR and PSSR are related upscaling technologies, but they are presented for different consoles. Sony describes QSSR as an implementation tuned for standard PS5 and calls PSSR the gold-standard option on PS5 Pro. The secondary report characterizes PSSR as more capable at a lower performance cost, while noting that hardware differences may contribute. That possible hardware explanation is not a confirmed causal finding, and there is no evidence that QSSR makes standard PS5 equivalent to PS5 Pro.
