QNAP’s QAI-M100 and QAI-U100 add dedicated acceleration for supported image-recognition tasks on compatible QNAP NAS systems, including photo object classification and facial recognition in QuMagie. The M100 installs through a supported M.2 or QM2 expansion route; the U100 connects by USB-A. Neither is a general-purpose accelerator for running arbitrary AI models, and a matching connector alone does not confirm compatibility.
What the QAI-M100 and QAI-U100 do
QNAP announced both products on July 22, 2025, describing them as edge AI accelerators for compatible NAS systems. Their intended workload is NAS photo recognition, such as organizing images in QuMagie Smart Album—not general-purpose AI computing. QNAP’s announcement attributes the acceleration to an NPU in each module.
QNAP reports that, in its lab comparison on a TS-673A, QuMagie Smart Album object recognition ran up to 36% faster and facial recognition up to 22% faster with a QAI accelerator than without one. These are vendor-reported, workload- and system-specific results, not independent benchmarks or guaranteed gains for other NAS models and libraries. QNAP’s launch announcement describes the comparison.

| Specification or installation factor | QAI-M100 | QAI-U100 |
|---|---|---|
| Host interface | M.2 2280, PCIe Gen 2 x1, M+B key | USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A |
| Installation route | Supported onboard M.2 slot or supported QNAP QM2 expansion card | Compatible USB Type-A port |
| Rated NPU performance | 3 TOPS | Up to 3 TOPS |

For the M100, the deciding question is whether the NAS supports the module or an eligible QM2 expansion-card route. For the U100, check support for the exact NAS and software combination rather than relying on the presence of a USB port. QNAP lists the QAI-M100 hardware specifications and the QAI-U100 product details.
#1 Best Overall
- ARM Cortex-A55 quad-core 2.0GHz processor with 4 GB DDR4 RAM
- Built-in NPU for AI Acceleration to boost performance for high-speed face and object recognition.
- 2.5GbE (2.5G/1G/100M) ports accelerates file sharing across teams and devices or streamline large file transfers
- Budget-friendly Home NAS for file storage and multimedia streaming
- Centrally store and organize personal or family photos, music, and videos
Check compatibility before buying
QNAP’s published requirements include the NAS model, NAS operating-system version, and the versions of its AI and photo-management applications. The listed minimums are:
- QTS 5.2.1.2930 build 20241025 or later, or QuTS hero h5.2.1.2929 build 20241025 or later.
- QNAP AI Core 3.5.0 or later.
- Multimedia Console 2.7.0 or later.
- QuMagie 1.5.1 or later.
These are QNAP’s stated software requirements; verify that the exact NAS model is supported on the current compatibility resources before ordering. The launch announcement does not establish a complete model roster, so do not infer compatibility from the connector or operating-system version alone.

Choose the installation route your NAS supports
QAI-M100: M.2 or QM2 expansion
The M100 is an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 2 x1 module with an M+B key. It can use a compatible onboard M.2 slot, or a supported QNAP QM2 card installed in a PCIe slot. A QM2 card is one possible route, not a universal requirement. Confirm that both the NAS and intended expansion configuration are supported.
QAI-U100: USB Type-A
The U100 uses USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A. That interface makes the physical connection external, but it does not make the device universally compatible with any NAS that has USB-A. Confirm the NAS model and software requirements, and consult QNAP’s U100 product page for the manufacturer’s product information.

- Both 2.5GbE ports are backwards compatible with 1GbE/ 100MbE speeds. Up to 5 Gbps transfer speeds can be achieved by using port trunking.
- Add extra functionality with PCIe cards, including 10GbE ports, SSD caching, extra USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, wireless networking, or Fibre Channel.
- Supports entry-level NVIDIA graphics cards for video processing or GPU-passthrough to VMs.
- Features two M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD slots for Qtier Technology and SSD Caching enable constant storage optimization.
- 2 x 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Port (2.5G/1G/100M); 3 x Type-A USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps
How to interpret QNAP’s performance figures
Each accelerator is specified at 3 TOPS. QNAP says two accelerators can be installed on one NAS or application; its U100 product page describes the resulting 6 TOPS as theoretical and cautions that actual performance varies with the NAS model and application. TOPS is a hardware throughput figure, not a promise that every supported task will run twice as fast with two units.
The more concrete application claim is QNAP Lab’s TS-673A comparison: up to 36% faster object recognition and up to 22% faster facial recognition in QuMagie Smart Album with a QAI accelerator. “Up to” matters: QNAP does not establish those gains for every NAS, photo collection, or software configuration, and no independent comparative test is established here.
