Qatar’s Government Communications Office said on 24 May 2017 that the Qatar News Agency (QNA) website had been hacked by an “unknown entity” and that a false statement attributed to the Emir had been published. The sources reviewed here do not identify who carried out the intrusion. Qatar later described preliminary technical findings and said the fabricated comments were used as a pretext for the regional rupture; that was Qatar’s interpretation, not an independently established finding.
What happened to Qatar News Agency?
In a statement on 24 May 2017, Qatar’s Government Communications Office (GCO) said QNA’s government news-agency website had been hacked and a false statement attributed to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani had been published. The GCO said the statement had no basis and that an investigation would be initiated. It described the perpetrator as an “unknown entity.” GCO statement, 24 May 2017.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the website was compromised at 12:14 a.m. and that QNA regained control about four hours later. Who was behind the hack?
The cited sources do not identify the attacker or independently verify an attribution. “Unknown entity” was the GCO’s description in its initial announcement, and the later official account summarized preliminary technical findings without naming an operator, sponsor, or specific exploit.
The GCO retrospective says that on 7 June 2017 Qatar’s Ministry of Interior reported preliminary findings: a cyber vulnerability had been exploited using highly advanced methods. The account does not specify the vulnerability, intrusion chain, or who used it. GCO retrospective, 24 May 2018.

Did the QNA hack trigger the 2017 Gulf crisis?
The sequence is clear: QNA’s hack was reported on 24 May, and Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt severed ties with Qatar on 5 June. Qatar’s later official account said the fabricated comments were used as a pretext for the rupture. That statement records Qatar’s position; the sources cited here do not independently establish the other governments’ motives or prove that the hack caused the diplomatic crisis.
In the 2018 retrospective, GCO Director Sheikh Saif bin Ahmed Al Thani characterized the incident as “definitely a component of a well-coordinated smear campaign designed to damage the image and reputation of Qatar.” This is his characterization of the event, not a technical attribution or judicial finding.
