There is no evidence that a quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin’s signatures exists today, and no reliable basis for saying Q-Day will arrive by 2030. The risk is real but conditional: a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could use a public key visible on the blockchain to derive its private key. Whether your own bitcoin is exposed depends on its address and spending history—not simply on which wallet holds it.

What would a quantum attack do to Bitcoin?

Bitcoin uses elliptic-curve digital signatures to authorize spending. In the relevant output types, those signatures use ECDSA or Schnorr. A sufficiently capable, cryptographically relevant quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm could solve the mathematical problem behind those systems and derive a private key from its corresponding public key. An attacker could then use that key to spend the associated coins.

This is not the same as guessing a seed phrase or breaking a wallet device. The concern is that a public key may be visible in blockchain data. If a key is exposed, keeping its private key in a hardware wallet does not make the public key disappear or change the cryptography securing the coins.

Long exposure and short exposure

BIP 360, a Bitcoin proposal, distinguishes two attack windows. With long exposure, a public key is available on-chain for an extended period, giving an attacker time to target it. With short exposure, the key becomes visible while a transaction is awaiting confirmation; the attacker would need to derive the private key and act within that brief window. The latter requires a faster attacker and is not solved simply by preventing long-term key exposure.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Does the 2030 date mean Q-Day is expected then?

No. NIST says it is not possible to predict exactly when—or even whether—quantum computers will break current encryption. Forecasts vary and depend on assumptions about future hardware and error correction. The year in the headline is best treated as a planning horizon, not an established deadline or a probability estimate.

A June 2026 arXiv preprint by Iosif M. Gershteyn and Jacob A. Alber estimates about a one-in-six chance of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer by 2035 under its model. That is one model-based estimate, not a consensus forecast, and it does not establish a specific probability by 2030.

The same preprint discusses quantum computing and Bitcoin mining. It argues that Grover’s quadratic speedup does not meaningfully threaten Bitcoin proof-of-work once fault-tolerant costs, parallelization, and difficulty adjustment are considered. That is the paper’s analysis, not a guarantee about every future quantum model. The signature and mining questions are distinct: the public-key risk described above is not a claim that quantum computers can simply take over Bitcoin mining.

Are your own bitcoin exposed?

There is no way to determine an individual holder’s exposure from the wallet brand or device alone. It depends on the specific output types, addresses, and transaction history associated with the coins. In general, an output whose public key has already been revealed on-chain presents a different exposure profile from one whose key has not been revealed. Reusing addresses can also leave a public key exposed beyond a single spend.

BIP 361 reports that, as of March 1, 2026, over 34% of all bitcoin had revealed a public key on-chain. This is the proposal’s aggregate estimate; it does not tell you whether any particular wallet or coin is exposed, nor does it mean that those coins have been stolen or can be stolen with today’s computers.

To assess your own holdings, review the relevant transaction history and wallet details to identify addresses and output types, and whether their public keys have been revealed. That review can help characterize exposure, but it cannot establish that a future quantum attacker exists or predict what it could do. A generic wallet recommendation cannot replace this coin-by-coin context.

What protections are proposed for Bitcoin?

The Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) texts describe possible protocol-level changes; they do not establish that a quantum-resistant upgrade is active or adopted across Bitcoin. BIP 360 and BIP 361 address different parts of the problem and should not be read as settled, mutually exclusive choices.

Proposal Approach described Attack window addressed Important qualification
BIP 360 Proposes Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), a script-tree output that removes the key path. Designed to mitigate long exposure by removing the quantum-vulnerable key path. The proposal says short-exposure protection may require post-quantum signatures; P2MR alone is not presented as solving that attack window.
BIP 361 Discusses a broader migration pathway and a sunset for legacy signatures. Addresses migration away from legacy signatures, including the challenge of exposed or immovable coins. Migration, coordination, and possible rescue mechanisms raise difficult questions; the proposal is not evidence that such a transition has been activated.

The proposals differ in scope: BIP 360 describes an output design aimed at long-term key exposure, while BIP 361 considers migration and eventual limits on legacy signatures. Any real transition would also require decisions about holders who do not move coins, infrastructure changes, and how to handle funds whose owners cannot migrate them. The reviewed proposals do not settle those choices or establish an activation date.

Do NIST’s post-quantum standards make Bitcoin quantum-safe?

No. NIST finalized three principal post-quantum standards in August 2024: ML-KEM (FIPS 203), ML-DSA (FIPS 204), and SLH-DSA (FIPS 205). Their existence is part of broader post-quantum preparation; it does not mean Bitcoin has adopted them or that a Bitcoin upgrade is active.

NIST mathematician Dustin Moody, who heads its post-quantum cryptography standardization project, said: “We encourage organizations to begin their transition to these standards immediately to ensure their data remains secure in the quantum era.” That is broad advice for organizations preparing their systems, not a Bitcoin-specific deployment order.

What can a Bitcoin holder do now?

  • Understand your exposure rather than assuming it. Use transaction history and wallet details to identify relevant addresses, output types, and public-key exposure. A wallet device by itself does not answer those questions.
  • Do not treat a wallet change as a protocol upgrade. Moving keys to a different wallet does not replace Bitcoin’s signature system or hide public keys already recorded on-chain.
  • Distinguish current security from future risk. The sources reviewed do not establish that a quantum computer capable of deriving Bitcoin private keys exists today. The timing of a future capability remains uncertain.
  • Follow protocol changes, not product claims. A meaningful Bitcoin-wide defense would depend on protocol and ecosystem changes, such as the proposals’ output or signature approaches. The reviewed sources do not establish an activated upgrade.
