For property photos, resize each image to the listing’s actual display dimensions, then compare JPEG, WebP, and AVIF versions of representative shots. Choose the version that meets the destination’s upload rules while keeping important details and color credible at the size viewers will see. Pillow is a practical Python starting point, but no format or quality setting is universally best for these photos.
What to decide before converting
Start with the destination, not a target compression percentage. Check the listing platform’s current accepted formats, maximum dimensions, file-size limits, and metadata rules. Those limits vary by platform and are not specified here, so do not assume a particular format or size will be accepted.
Next, determine the dimensions at which the listing will display the photo. If the original is much larger than needed, resize it before encoding the final file. This avoids spending bytes on detail that will not be shown at the intended display size.

Pillow’s current format guide documents reading and writing JPEG and WebP, as well as reading and writing AVIF. Availability can depend on the installed Pillow build and its codec libraries, so check support in the environment that will produce the files. The documentation describes encoding controls, not property-photo benchmark results.

Compatibility, final byte size, visible detail and color, encoding support and time, and metadata handling are all relevant comparison criteria. Which format wins depends on the platform and the particular photos.
Build and compare candidates with Pillow
Use the same source image and target dimensions for each candidate so the comparison isolates encoding choices. The example below opens an image, applies its EXIF orientation, makes a resized copy, and writes separate JPEG and WebP candidates. Set the dimensions and quality values for your own platform and evaluation; the example values are not a recommended property-photo preset.

Do not treat similarly numbered quality controls across formats as equivalent: the documentation does not establish a shared perceptual scale.

- Choose several representative property photos rather than testing only one. Include scenes with bright windows, shadow detail, fine textures, straight architectural lines, and mixed lighting.
- Resize each photo to the intended maximum display dimensions, then create separate candidates in each format supported by your workflow and the destination.
- Record each candidate’s byte size and inspect all candidates at the actual display size. Look for lost texture, distracting artifacts around edges, color shifts, and damage to highlights or shadows.
- Compare the results against the platform’s upload requirements and choose the smallest file that still looks credible for the listing. This is a practical evaluation method, not a published benchmark or fixed quality threshold.
Handle color profiles and embedded metadata
Color profiles and EXIF data are separate choices from image format and quality. Pillow’s JPEG save options allow an ICC profile and EXIF data to be passed explicitly; if no profile is supplied, the documented save behavior writes the image without an attached profile. If consistent color matters, preserve the appropriate ICC profile and check the rendered result after saving. Pillow JPEG saving options

Retain EXIF only when it serves a real need. Image metadata can contain location or other information that should not be published. Pillow’s security guidance says to treat image metadata as untrusted and strip it when it is not required. Confirm what metadata remains in the final output rather than assuming every save operation preserves or removes it as intended. Pillow security guidance

A format being documented by Pillow does not guarantee that a particular installation can encode it or that a listing platform and its viewers can display it. Check the installed build and codec support, then test actual output files in the destination workflow. For AVIF in particular, verify both successful encoding and display on the clients that matter to your audience.

- Check byte size against the destination’s current limit.
- Inspect orientation, color, sharp edges, window highlights, and shadow detail at the expected display size.
- Verify the file format is accepted and renders correctly where it will be viewed.
- Check that only intended metadata is present.
