For most players, the better mode depends on how much threat from other players they want around their base. PvP suits players who want base defense and raiding to be part of the game. PvE suits players who want to build, gather, and explore with fewer direct attacks from other players. The PvP or PvE label alone does not settle the question, though. Raid rules, offline protection, inactivity timers, wipe schedules, and building restrictions are set by each game and each server, and they decide how safe a base really is.

How the two modes compare for base building

The table below uses the documented rules for three examples: ARK: Survival Ascended, Rust’s Softcore mode, and the PvE and PvP options on OXIDE: Survival Island. The OXIDE details are covered in their own section below. These cells describe those games only. They are not a general ruling on every survival game.

Rule ARK PvP ARK PvE Rust Softcore
Damage between players Permitted Prevented Permitted, with lower PvP damage than vanilla Rust
Raids on other tribes’ or players’ buildings Permitted, including destroying other tribes’ buildings Prevented for other tribes’ structures Raid windows apply. The default window is 6 PM to 9 PM server local time (Facepunch, “Common Ground”)
Inactive bases Not stated in the ARK support article A demolish timer can remove structures when no tribe member has logged in for a specified period. The period is not stated in the article Not stated in Facepunch’s “Server Gamemodes” or “Common Ground” pages
Team size Not stated for the mode itself. The Small Tribes format on the same page sets a six-player limit Not stated for the mode itself. The Small Tribes format on the same page sets a six-player limit Maximum team size of four
Loot after death or a raid Not stated in the ARK support article Not stated in the ARK support article Partial inventory retention on death. Half of base-storage loot is retained when raided

ARK: Survival Ascended, the clearest PvP and PvE split

Studio Wildcard’s support article “Different types of game modes,” dated December 27, 2023, gives the most direct description of the two modes. On PvP servers, players can damage or kill one another, and they can damage or destroy another tribe’s buildings or kill its creatures. On PvE servers, players cannot directly damage one another, and they cannot damage other tribes’ creatures or structures.

PvE has one exception that matters for base planning. A demolish timer can remove structures when no tribe member has logged in for a specified amount of time. The article does not give that period, so check the server’s own rules before relying on a base you will leave unattended.

  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout

Server formats change more than the mode label

The same article describes several formats that alter the experience beyond PvP or PvE:

  • Small Tribes: a six-player tribe limit, no alliances, and specified resource and breeding rates.
  • ARKpocalypse: can run as either PvP or PvE and resets automatically after a month.
  • Conquest: a PvP format with a stated player cap and tribe limit.

These are examples from the article. Formats and listings can change, so confirm them on the server before you build.

Conduct rules still apply on PvE

PvE removes direct combat between players, but it does not remove disputes over land and access. Studio Wildcard’s Official Network conduct rules for ARK: Survival Ascended prohibit blocking another tribe’s access, building at another tribe’s base, and intentionally using wild creatures to destroy a player’s base. The rules say they may change without notice.

Rust: a hybrid mode with raid windows

Facepunch’s “Server Gamemodes” page describes Softcore as a gentler version of vanilla Rust rather than a PvE mode. Raiding stays possible. The page lists a maximum team size of four, lower PvP damage, partial inventory retention on death, and a 48-hour restriction on raiders who seal or grief a base after breaking its Tool Cupboard. It also says a raided base keeps half of its base-storage loot. Switching game modes in the middle of a wipe resets players and their inventory, so choose the mode before the wipe begins.

Raid windows and Tool Cupboard protection

Facepunch’s “Common Ground” update describes defined Softcore raid windows. The default window runs from 6 PM to 9 PM server local time. Outside that window, a qualifying Tool Cupboard protects building blocks and doors. Deployables and an unprotected cupboard can still be attacked at any time. The cupboard must be at least one hour old before it blocks raids.

These are server-mode settings, not a promise that every Rust server uses them. The page does not show a publication date, so confirm the window and cupboard rules in the server’s settings.

OXIDE: Survival Island, the same labels with different meaning

OXIDE: Survival Island’s support page, “Server Modes and Filters in OXIDE,” says its PvP option allows base raids. Its PvE option disables attacks on other players and protects bases with a cupboard, with the emphasis on survival, building, and exploration. This describes that service only. A PvE label on one game does not carry the same rules into another.

Questions to answer before you commit to a base

  • Raidability: Can other players damage walls, doors, storage, or defenses?
  • Offline protection: Is there a raid window, cupboard protection, or no protection while you are away?
  • Persistence: Does inactivity decay or demolish structures, and how often does the server wipe?
  • Building rules: Are there location limits, structure caps, or bans on blocking access?
  • Social rules: Are alliances, team sizes, griefing, and raid conduct regulated?
  • Desired tension: Do you want other players to create risk, or mainly environmental challenge and construction?

Which mode should you choose?

  • Choose PvP if defending your base and raiding others is part of the appeal. Treat raids as a normal risk of the mode. On ARK PvP servers, other tribes can destroy your buildings.
  • Choose PvE if you want to build, gather, and explore without other players attacking your structures. On ARK PvE servers, plan to log in regularly, since the demolish timer applies to inactive tribes.
  • Choose a hybrid such as Rust Softcore if you want raiding to exist but prefer time windows and partial loot protection.

No documented study compares base-building outcomes or play length between PvP and PvE, so the available evidence does not show that either mode produces better bases. The choice comes down to the risk you want. Before you start, read the current rules for the specific server, because wipes, offline protection, and placement rules are set there rather than by the mode name.
