Western companies could get Russian assets back if circumstances become “favourable,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said on October 1, 2026. But his remarks at the Valdai Discussion Club were conditional: the cited reports do not identify a binding restitution order, qualifying companies, a process, or a timetable.

What did Putin say about returning Western companies’ assets?

Asked whether Western companies’ assets would be returned in a favourable scenario, Putin answered, “Yes, they would,” according to AFP. Reuters, republished by Internazionale, likewise described his statement as conditional. It signals that a return could be possible if circumstances improve; it does not promise that any particular company will recover its Russian business.

The distinction matters because Russian authorities have placed some Russian businesses of Western companies under temporary or external administration. The reports of Putin’s remarks do not explain what would make a scenario favourable or how control or ownership would change.

Does the statement guarantee that Metro, Auchan, or Nestlé will get their businesses back?

No named-company guarantee appears in the cited reports. Recent orders offer context for the question, but they should not be read as cases Putin individually promised to reverse.

  • Metro: The Associated Press reported that Putin ordered Metro AG’s Russian assets under temporary administration on September 28, 2026. AP’s report
  • Nestlé and Auchan: AP reported September orders affecting their Russian businesses, alongside other affiliates. AP’s report
  • FM Logistic and Lemana Pro: Vedomosti’s Russian-language report names these businesses among those mentioned in connection with September actions. Vedomosti’s report

The cited coverage does not establish that all these companies have the same legal or commercial circumstances. Nor does it say that the October 1 statement specifically covers any of them.

Does “temporary administration” mean former owners will get their businesses back?

No. Temporary administration describes a measure, not an automatic path back to the former owner. AP reports that the Russian businesses of Danone and Carlsberg were later sold to Russian owners after being placed under administration. AP’s account shows why the word “temporary” alone cannot establish what will happen to a business.

Could companies return to Russia even if their former assets are not restored?

Asset restoration and market re-entry are separate questions. A former owner might seek to recover a specific business or asset; market re-entry concerns whether a company can resume operating or compete in Russia. Putin’s October 2026 comments concerned possible asset returns, while his earlier remarks addressed the terms for companies re-entering the market.

In a 2025 Kremlin transcript, Putin said occupied market niches would remain occupied, there would be no preferential terms for companies returning, and the government would protect domestic producers while remaining within WTO frameworks. He also said, “You are welcome at any time.” The Kremlin transcript is context on market access, not a rule for restoring assets under administration or an assurance that a former owner can reclaim its business.

What remains unknown about possible asset returns?

The cited reports do not specify the legal mechanism, eligibility criteria, or timetable for returning assets. They also do not establish that Putin’s statement creates an enforceable right or that an official restitution plan exists. Without those details, the practical outcome for any individual company remains uncertain.
