Verdict: PuroAir’s Mega Filter and PuroAir 240 serve different jobs, so neither is a substitute for the other. The Mega Filter is a MERV 13 HVAC filter for a compatible furnace or air-conditioning system; the 240 is a portable room air purifier with its own dedicated replacement filter. PuroAir lists useful features for both, but its published figures are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results.
What the PuroAir Mega Filter and 240 are—and are not
The name can make these products sound like parts of one system. They are not. The PuroAir Mega Filter is installed in an HVAC filter slot. The PuroAir 240 is a standalone purifier placed in a room, and it takes a separately sold filter made specifically for that model.
That distinction determines what to buy: choose an HVAC filter only after matching your system’s required size and compatibility; choose the 240 if you want a portable room appliance. The Mega Filter does not fit the 240.

PuroAir describes the Mega Filter as a residential and commercial HVAC filter with a pre-filter, a MERV 13 layer, and activated carbon. Its product page lists multiple nominal sizes, including 20 × 20 × 1 inch and 20 × 25 × 1 inch. MERV 13 is the manufacturer’s stated rating; independent testing specific to this product was not established.

How to choose the right size
Do not order based only on a size shown in a product listing. Check the dimensions printed on your current filter and measure the HVAC slot if the label is missing or unclear. Then use PuroAir’s live size selector to find the matching option. The nominal size is not a substitute for confirming that the filter fits your equipment.
Fit is only one part of HVAC compatibility. Before switching filters, check your system documentation or ask an HVAC professional whether the specified filtration level and filter thickness suit your equipment. The available product information does not establish airflow or pressure-drop performance for the Mega Filter across HVAC systems.

PuroAir describes the 240 as a room purifier with a three-layer filter: a pre-screen, a HEPA layer, and activated carbon. Listed features include an air-quality sensor and indicator, automatic adjustment based on air quality, and a filter replacement notification.
PuroAir claims coverage of up to 1,000 square feet and lists a lowest noise level of 24 dB. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified measurements. The area figure does not establish a particular clean-air delivery rate or guarantee equivalent cleaning in every room; room conditions and the selected operating setting matter.

What to consider before buying
For a room purifier, useful comparisons include independently measured clean-air delivery at stated settings, noise at settings you would actually use, energy consumption, replacement-filter availability and cost, and maintenance. The product information available for the 240 does not provide independent comparative results on those measures. Its listed sensor, automatic mode, and filter alert may be convenient, but they do not by themselves establish how quickly or effectively it cleans a particular room.

How often to replace it
PuroAir gives variable guidance rather than one consistent interval: its product copy promotes 90-day auto-delivery and replacement, its FAQ recommends replacement every 2 to 4 months, and the same FAQ says lighter pollution and less use may allow up to six months. Treat timing as dependent on use and conditions, and follow the purifier’s replacement indicator and current manufacturer guidance rather than assuming one schedule suits every home.

- Turn off and unplug the PuroAir 240.
- Open the filter compartment and remove the old filter.
- Fit the replacement filter into the compartment.
- Close the compartment and reset the filter indicator as described by the manufacturer.
Can you use a generic filter?
PuroAir identifies its own replacement filter as compatible with the 240. The manufacturer warns that generic replacements are not guaranteed for compatibility or performance; that is not evidence that every generic filter is incompatible. If considering one, verify the exact model fit, dimensions, and seller’s claims, and understand that the manufacturer’s compatibility or performance assurances may not apply.

How strong is the evidence behind the claims?
The cited product information comes from PuroAir’s own pages. It describes what the company says its products include and specifies the Mega Filter’s MERV 13 rating, the 240’s claimed coverage and lowest listed noise level, and the replacement-filter guidance. It does not establish independent comparative performance for either product.
PuroAir’s replacement-filter page also hosts a recommendation attributed to William C. Krasner, NP-C, identified there as family medicine: “I recommend the PuroAir 240 to families because it helps tackle the common irritants that often build up at home, like dust, smoke, pet dander, and chemical fumes from cleaners or paints.” This is a vendor-hosted recommendation, not independent clinical evidence or a comparative test.
For an evidence-based comparison, look for independent clean-air delivery and noise measurements for room purifiers, and for HVAC filters, evidence on exact dimensions, system compatibility, filtration rating, airflow or pressure drop, and replacement cost. Do not treat a feature list or coverage claim as a substitute for those measurements.
