Purchasing a computer means choosing a laptop or desktop, operating system, and configuration that fit the work you need to do and the programs you need to run. The decision is not just about picking a processor or brand: it also involves portability, display and workspace needs, compatible software, setup costs, and budget.
What does purchasing a computer involve?
It is the process of matching a computer to your actual needs. Start with the tasks you expect it to handle, then check the software requirements and decide what kind of device and configuration will support them. A computer that looks powerful on paper may still be a poor fit if it cannot run a required application, lacks needed ports, or costs more than your intended setup budget.
Microsoft advises buyers to check the system requirements for the programs they plan to use. Its PC and Laptop Buying Guide also organizes component guidance around different use cases, rather than presenting one configuration as right for everyone.

Choose between a laptop and a desktop
A laptop is the practical choice when you need to carry your computer between locations. Screen size involves a trade-off: a larger display can provide more viewing space, while a smaller laptop is generally easier to carry. Consumer Reports discusses this balance in its Laptop & Chromebook Buying Guide.
#1 Best Overall

- ENJOY UP TO 14 HOURS AND 15 MINUTES OF BATTERY LIFE - HP Fast Charge restores battery from 0 to 50% in approximately 45 minutes

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
A desktop is suited to a stationary workspace. It can use a separate monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and may offer more flexibility for components. Include the monitor and other necessary equipment in the cost and make sure you have room for the setup. Consumer Reports covers traditional towers and monitor selection in its desktop computer buying guide.
Check operating-system and device compatibility
The operating system affects which applications and hardware are available to you. Confirm that your essential programs and peripherals—such as a printer, audio interface, or other specialized device—work with the platform on the computer you are considering. Do this before comparing specifications, since a fast machine is not useful for a task if its required software or equipment is incompatible.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Which specifications matter for your tasks?
Compare processor, RAM, storage, graphics, display, and ports or connectivity according to the work you intend to do. The relevant balance differs by workload: everyday multitasking, gaming, creative projects, and other uses do not automatically call for the same components. Check the current requirements of your specific programs rather than treating a general buying guide as a universal minimum.

These are Microsoft recommendations for those profiles, not requirements for every computer buyer. How should you plan the budget?
Set priorities before shopping: decide which tasks, features, and trade-offs matter most, then compare options that satisfy those needs. The Federal Trade Commission’s online shopping advice recommends determining what is most important about the item you are considering. Its advice appears in Online Shopping – Security Tips.
Budget for the complete setup, not only the computer itself. A desktop may need a separate monitor, and either form factor may require accessories or connectivity equipment for your planned use. Compare the total cost against the space available and the functions you actually need.
