Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) chemical computers use the changing states of an oscillating reaction to represent and process information. Researchers have demonstrated memory, pattern recognition, cellular automata and optimization experiments with BZ-based systems—but the “quantum rivals” comparison describes competing research directions, not a verified contest. No cited study shows a BZ computer outperforming a quantum computer.
What is a pulsating chemical computer?
Chemical computing is a broad family of methods that use chemical states or reactions to process information. In BZ systems, a reaction repeatedly changes state, producing visible color oscillations. Researchers can encode information in those states, link reacting cells so they influence one another, and read the evolving pattern over time. The broader field also includes reaction-diffusion and geometry-assisted approaches, so a BZ array is one architecture, not a stand-in for every chemical computer. A 2021 review of chemical computation surveys that range.
“Computer” does not necessarily mean a self-contained machine that accepts a conventional program and returns an answer unaided. In recent BZ demonstrations, chemistry works alongside digital input, control, logic, image processing or readout. The computation may partly occur in the reacting medium, while electronics configure or interpret it.
What have BZ experiments demonstrated?
Memory and pattern recognition
A 2020 Nature Communications study used a 5-by-5 array of 25 switchable cells to demonstrate memory and pattern recognition. In that specific experiment, the system distinguished 20 patterns reliably, with accuracy of up to 92.5%. That figure describes the study’s task and apparatus; it is not a general accuracy rating for chemical computers. The 2020 paper reports the experiment and its conditions.

Cellular automata and optimization
A 2024 Nature Communications study presented a digitally programmable hybrid array of BZ oscillators in interconnected cells. Neighboring-cell interactions and digital control enabled demonstrations of one- and two-dimensional chemical cellular automata and probabilistic logic applied to combinatorial-optimization problems. The authors describe a hybrid digital-and-chemical processor with error-correction logic—not a purely chemical machine or a quantum-computing benchmark. The 2024 study details the platform.
Separately, a report published by Chemistry World on 26 March 2024 described University of Glasgow researchers’ use of two arrays of interconnected wells and BZ color oscillations to investigate optimization problems also studied in quantum-computing research. Experts quoted in the report expressed skepticism about claims of a future result that would rival quantum computing. The reported work shows a way to configure chemical systems for computation; it does not show that they have beaten quantum hardware. The report supplies the context for the headline’s comparison.

Why the quantum comparison is not a head-to-head result
Both chemical and quantum approaches are being explored for difficult computational problems, including optimization. That overlap makes them research rivals in a broad sense, but a meaningful performance claim would require a comparable workload and a defined quantum system. The studies cited here do not report a verified head-to-head result showing that a BZ computer is faster, more accurate or more capable than a quantum computer.

A fair comparison would need to account for:
- The same problem and workload: compare systems solving the same instance, not merely the same broad class of problems.
- Output quality: report solution quality and error rates, not just whether a system produced an output.
- End-to-end runtime: include encoding and input, chemical evolution, digital control, and readout.
- Scale and repeatability: show how performance changes with system size and whether independent runs reproduce it.
- Where the computation happens: distinguish processing in the chemical substrate from work performed by digital controls or other electronics.
Without those details, the fact that many chemical cells interact at once does not by itself establish an advantage over a quantum system.

What limits the current demonstrations?
Reaction time and reagent depletion
In the 2020 apparatus, the reaction was allowed to stabilize for 10 minutes, researchers observed visible oscillations over a 30-minute window, and cycles lasted about 40 seconds to one minute. The paper also notes that reagents deplete over time. These are conditions and observations for that particular setup and recipe, not universal limits for every BZ system. The study’s methods and results provide the experiment-specific context.
Engineering reliability and scaling
For a practical processor, a striking small-array demonstration is only a starting point. Robustness, reproducibility, connectivity between cells, scaling, miniaturization, coupling and readout all affect whether a system can perform larger tasks reliably. IBM Research’s archived chemical-computing project page identifies these as open questions; its Ising-solver outcomes are stated as project aims, not completed results.

These issues also help explain why a hybrid architecture should be judged as a whole. A chemical substrate may supply useful interactions, but digital control and measurement can add time and complexity. The demonstrations establish that chemical dynamics can be harnessed for specific computational tasks; they do not establish a general-purpose replacement for digital computers or a demonstrated substitute for quantum hardware.
