PUBG: DED.NET is designed as a faster, stranger take on PUBG—not a smaller copy or a direct sequel. Creative Director Dave Curd says its identity comes from desperate survival and hard choices, while its camera, gunplay, movement, and multi-match progression change how that pressure plays out.
What makes DED.NET feel like PUBG without its familiar rules?
In GamerWK’s September 1, 2026 interview, the central design question is framed this way: “If the Blue Zone and Level 3 helmet are removed, what makes PUBG still PUBG?” That is a translation of the Indonesian subheading, not an English quote from Curd.
Curd’s answer is the survival pressure underneath the familiar mechanics: uncertainty, difficult decisions, and the stories players create while trying to outlast the odds. In a separate Gamescom interview, he described PUBG’s “beating heart” as “desperate survival and the law of the jungle,” where “the smart and adaptable overcome the odds and come out on top.” Those are his design principles, not a claim that DED.NET preserves every PUBG rule.

That distinction matters. Curd says the game changes camera perspective, gunplay, and movement. He calls it a “mutant cousin” rather than a twin of PUBG. His aim is a faster, more interactive, grittier experience that still rewards improvisation when circumstances turn against a team.

How does a DED.NET run work?
Gamescom coverage describes matches with 60 players in squads of three, set in a 2.5-kilometer circle. Those are developer-reported design details, not independently measured statistics. Unlike a battle royale built solely around one match’s result, DED.NET connects matches into a longer run: players develop a character direction, acquire abilities, and decide when to risk continuing or leave with what they have accumulated.
Curd characterizes the game as a heavily altered battle royale. It also has extraction-shooter elements because players seek to leave with gear and items. That makes “battle royale with extraction elements” more precise than calling it a conventional extraction shooter.

ROMs shape a character over multiple matches
Players can acquire ROMs, described as chips wired into the brain, that unlock abilities. Examples range from quicker reloads and longer dives to more fantastical or disruptive effects. The point is not just to select a fixed loadout before a match: the run lets players build toward a character style as play unfolds.

Matches can also add injuries or ailments that interfere with play. Players therefore weigh an ability’s benefit against its drawbacks, and consider whether to continue the run or extract rewards before accumulated damage becomes too costly. A loss does not necessarily end the overall journey immediately.

This creates a deliberately awkward bargain: build toward powerful abilities, but manage the conditions attached to continued progress. Curd presents that tension as a source of both pressure and comedy, rather than a clean path to an increasingly powerful character.
Why change PUBG’s pace and feel?
Curd told Video Games Chronicle that some “great, smart gamers” may not connect with PUBG’s “strategic, thoughtful, cerebral pace,” and that DED.NET was intended to offer something for them. Faster movement and more direct interaction are the design response he describes; the game is not framed as a replacement for PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS or as a simpler edition of it.

The difference is also structural. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is the familiar reference point for a battle royale match, while DED.NET’s described run links multiple matches through character progression and extraction decisions. In DED.NET, the player’s build and accumulated injuries become part of the next decision, so survival pressure continues beyond a single match.
What has been reported about platforms and timing?
Gamemeca reported console-first development for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Curd said a PC version was in the pipeline, and that planned closed tests would focus on consoles first while the team considered controls and PC optimization. These are reported plans, not confirmation of final platforms or test availability.

Gamemeca’s Gamescom coverage said release timing and price had not been disclosed. The coverage does not establish a release date, price, or that the reported platform and testing plans remain current.
