Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-upscaling option for the standard PlayStation 5. The first games named for it are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, which received patches adding QSSR on October 1, 2026. Sony has not confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will use it.
What is QSSR on PS5?
Quick Spectral Super Resolution is Sony’s new AI-upscaling library for the standard PS5. Sony says it was developed from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and uses a streamlined neural-network architecture with a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. The goal is to improve image detail and stability by reconstructing a higher-resolution image from a game’s rendered output.
Sony calls QSSR a “new performance tier of AI upscaling.” The company describes its image-quality benefits, but its announcement does not provide independent benchmarks or numerical performance results. Those descriptions should be understood as Sony’s claims, not as measured comparisons across games.
Does the regular PS5 get AI upscaling?
Yes. QSSR brings Sony’s AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5, with availability depending on whether a game’s developers implement it. Sony says it will make the library broadly available to PlayStation developers, but that does not mean every PS5 game will support it.

Sony positions QSSR separately from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the upscaling option for PS5 Pro. Its stated comparison is about target hardware and positioning—not a measured head-to-head image-quality or frame-rate ranking.

Which games support QSSR now?
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games. Each received a patch on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

The developers described the changes in visual terms. Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine detail in Ghost of Yōtei with temporal stability. These are developer descriptions, not independent test results.

Will GTA 6 use QSSR?
It has not been confirmed. Sony’s QSSR announcement does not mention Grand Theft Auto VI, and PlayStation’s separate announcement about the game’s PS5 release and features does not mention QSSR. Claims that the game will include QSSR at launch are speculation unless Sony or Rockstar confirms support.

The timing may explain the connection: QSSR was announced on October 1, 2026, ahead of the game’s planned PS5 release. A ScreenRant story published on October 2 speculated that QSSR could appear in GTA VI, but did not establish it as a confirmed feature.
When is GTA 6 coming to PS5?
PlayStation lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 on November 19, 2026. That is the official date in Sony’s June 24, 2026 announcement. Sony also describes DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5’s high-speed SSD as part of the game’s PS5 experience.

Sony’s marketing statement that the game will “play best on PS5” is promotional language, not an independent comparison with other platforms. The announced PS5 features also do not establish QSSR support.

Sony describes QSSR as a feature for the standard PS5, so the announcement does not indicate that an existing standard-PS5 owner needs a new console to use it in supported games. A DualSense controller is described as part of the planned GTA VI PS5 experience, but Sony has not said that buying a new controller or console is required for QSSR.
