There is no single best console for everyone. Choose by whether you need discs, which games and friends you want access to, the performance target and storage you need, and the current price of the exact configuration in your region. PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S are both disc-free, but Series S is a lower performance and storage tier than Series X—not simply the same console without a disc drive.

PS5 and Xbox Series models at a glance

Console configuration Disc access Listed storage Vendor-stated display target
PS5 console Disc drive 1 TB Supports 4K and up to 120 fps with 120 Hz output in supported circumstances
PS5 Digital Edition No drive included; compatible slim models can use a separately sold add-on drive 825 GB Supports 4K and up to 120 fps with 120 Hz output in supported circumstances
Xbox Series X, 1 TB Carbon Black Disc drive 1 TB SSD Designed for native 4K; up to 120 FPS in supported content with a compatible display
Xbox Series X, 1 TB Robot White All-digital, no disc drive 1 TB SSD Designed for native 4K; up to 120 FPS in supported content with a compatible display
Xbox Series X, 2 TB Galaxy Black Disc drive 2 TB SSD Designed for native 4K; up to 120 FPS in supported content with a compatible display
Xbox Series S All-digital, no disc drive 512 GB or 1 TB SSD Designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling; up to 120 FPS in supported content with a compatible display

These are the configurations and capability descriptions on the manufacturers’ US pages, accessed October 5, 2026; other regions and retailer lineups may differ. Sony’s PS5 product page and 1 TB store listing describe the PlayStation options. Microsoft’s Series X and Series S pages list the Xbox configurations.

Do you need a disc drive?

A disc drive matters if you own physical games, buy used games, borrow or lend discs, or want to play supported video discs. A digital-only console depends on digital purchases and downloads; a disc collection does not transfer into a digital library simply because you own the same game.

PS5 options

Sony’s US listing identifies a 1 TB PS5 with a disc drive and an 825 GB Digital Edition without one. The separately sold add-on disc drive is specified for PS5 Digital Edition slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups, and an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. Do not assume it fits every Digital Edition revision; check the console’s exact model group before buying.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Sony says that from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available to purchase in digital format only. It also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on a disc-equipped console. That notice concerns future purchase availability, not the ability to play your existing older discs.

Xbox options

Series S is digital-only. Series X is available in both disc-drive and all-digital configurations in Microsoft’s current US lineup, so check the specific color and capacity rather than assuming every Series X has a drive. A disc-equipped Xbox is the relevant choice if you need to use physical games or supported movie discs.

How much performance and storage do you need?

Display target

Microsoft positions Series X for native 4K and Series S for 1440p with the ability to upscale to 4K. Sony’s US PS5 pages list 4K support and up to 120 fps with 120 Hz output in supported circumstances. These are capability ceilings and design targets, not promises that every game runs at that resolution or frame rate. Actual output depends on the game, its settings, and the display.

If you have a 4K display and prioritize the Xbox’s stated native-4K positioning, Series X is the closer fit. Series S is a more appropriate trade-off if you are comfortable with its 1440p design and upscaled 4K. For PS5, compare the same game and display requirements you care about rather than treating a maximum specification as a guarantee.

Storage

Compare the specific capacity, not just the console family: Sony lists 1 TB for its disc PS5 and 825 GB for its Digital Edition; Microsoft lists Series S in 512 GB and 1 TB versions, and Series X in 1 TB and 2 TB versions. Nominal capacity is not the same as free space after system reservations and installed games, so consider how many large games you expect to keep installed at once.

Microsoft identifies a dedicated Series X|S Storage Expansion Card port and says the card adds storage at the same performance as the console’s custom SSD. If you are considering expansion, verify that the card is compatible with your exact Xbox model. Storage needs and expansion options should be part of the total cost, especially when comparing a smaller-capacity model with a larger one.

Which games and platform features matter to you?

Start with the specific games you already own, want to play, or plan to play with friends. Sony says PS5 plays over 8,500 PS4 games and that Game Boost increases frame rates in select PS4 games. Microsoft says Xbox supports thousands of games across four generations and works with Xbox One accessories. These are broad compatibility statements, not a guarantee for every older title, disc, or accessory; check the exact game or device before purchasing.

  • PS5: Sony promotes DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported games. The effect depends on the game and whether you value those controller features.
  • Xbox: Microsoft lists Quick Resume, Smart Delivery, and Xbox One accessory compatibility. Check individual game and accessory details where a feature is essential.
  • Either platform: If friends, saved progress, or a particular game’s online community are decisive, confirm that the game supports the play arrangement you need before choosing by hardware alone.

Sony’s US store listing says the 1 TB PS5 includes one DualSense controller and that the vertical stand is sold separately; it also lists two horizontal feet. For local multiplayer, check the game’s player limit and whether you will need another controller.

How to choose the right model

Choose a disc-equipped PS5 if…

  • You want access to physical PS5 games, your supported disc library, or supported movie discs.
  • You prefer PlayStation’s games and controller features, and the listed 1 TB capacity suits your needs.

Choose PS5 Digital Edition if…

  • You are committed to buying PlayStation games digitally and do not need a drive for your current disc collection.
  • You want PS5’s platform and features but are comfortable with the listed 825 GB capacity.
  • You may want physical-disc flexibility later: confirm that your console is a compatible slim CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 model before relying on the separately sold add-on drive.

Choose a disc-equipped Xbox Series X if…

  • You want an Xbox with a disc drive and Microsoft’s Series X native-4K positioning.
  • You are choosing between Series X configurations: verify that the exact model is the 1 TB disc Carbon Black or 2 TB disc Galaxy Black rather than the all-digital 1 TB Robot White.

Choose all-digital Xbox Series X if…

  • You want Series X’s performance tier and 1 TB listed capacity but do not need a disc drive.
  • You are comfortable purchasing Xbox games digitally and have checked that the all-digital configuration meets your needs.

Choose Xbox Series S if…

  • You want an all-digital Xbox and are comfortable with its 1440p design and 4K upscaling rather than Series X’s native-4K positioning.
  • You have compared the 512 GB and 1 TB versions and selected the capacity that fits your installed-game habits.

Compare the real total cost in your region

The manufacturer pages used here are US pages, and retailer prices and availability vary. Sony’s direct listing directs buyers to retailers rather than establishing a stable current price in the captured listing. Compare live prices for the same region and configuration, including storage, disc drive, any required extra controller, and any expansion storage you expect to buy. Do not compare a discounted digital model with a disc model without accounting for the games or discs you would use.

Subscriptions and game catalogs change over time. Check the current catalog and benefits for the specific service and region before treating a subscription as a reason to choose one console. If the prices are close, let your game library, friends, and need for discs decide; if they are not, weigh the savings against the performance, capacity, or disc access you would give up.
