Sony Interactive Entertainment and Crunchyroll plan a dedicated anime hub inside the PS5 home experience, targeted for spring 2027. It is a discovery and access space that brings together anime, anime-inspired games, and a more direct route into the full Crunchyroll app. Sony has not yet published interface screenshots, subscription requirements, an exact launch date, or a list of countries that will receive it. The sections below separate what has been announced from what remains open.
What Sony and Crunchyroll announced
PlayStation leader Hideaki Nishino announced the hub at the inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum. Contemporary coverage describes it as a dedicated area in the PS5 home experience, not a new streaming service. The stated goal is to make anime and anime-inspired games easier to find, and to make the full Crunchyroll app easier to reach from the console. Gematsu reported the announcement on October 7, 2026, and Push Square covered it the same month.
Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini framed the move as a continuation of the existing partnership:

The phrasing is as reported by Push Square. If you quote it, attribute it to Rahul Purini, Crunchyroll president, and check the original company release for exact wording.

The hub is described as making Crunchyroll easier to reach, which implies the app already exists on the platform. Coverage of the announcement lists Crunchyroll among PS5 entertainment apps. The hub is therefore best understood as a new front door to an existing app rather than the arrival of Crunchyroll on PlayStation.

LIVE TV: the anime option available now in the U.S.
Readers who want anime on PS5 today have a separate option. It is not the spring 2027 hub, and it should not be confused with it.
What LIVE TV offers
- Where to find it: the Media section of the PS5 console.
- Cost: free and ad-supported, according to PlayStation’s August 31, 2026 blog post.
- Scope: more than 100 channels plus on-demand programming, as described in the same post.
- Anime named at launch: Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, and Death Note, plus Crunchyroll channels for Black Clover and box sets.
- Caveat: PlayStation notes that programming can vary by local TV market and change over time.
Where LIVE TV is available
LIVE TV launched in the U.S. on August 31, 2026. Sony Pictures Entertainment’s release for the same launch says Canada was to follow and that two Crunchyroll anime channels were created for LIVE TV. Those facts describe LIVE TV only. They do not define which countries will get the spring 2027 hub.

Sony and Crunchyroll’s broader anime strategy
Sony Group’s corporate strategy announcement of May 8, 2026 identifies anime as an important growth sector. It reports that Crunchyroll served more than 21 million paid subscribers globally as of the end of March 2026. That is a paid-subscriber count, not a total of registered users, and it should be read with that date. Sony describes its anime work as spanning production, fan engagement, marketing, and global distribution. The PS5 hub fits that picture as one part of a wider push, but no audience estimate, uptake target, or revenue figure has been published for the hub.

What PS5 owners should do now
- If you already own a PS5, nothing in the announcements suggests you need new hardware for the hub. Supported models have not been named, though, so confirm when Sony publishes requirements.
- If you do not own a PS5, the hub is not yet a reason to buy one on its own. Its launch window is months away and its terms are unknown.
- If you want anime on PS5 now and live in the U.S., LIVE TV is free to try from the Media section.
- If you already subscribe to Crunchyroll, do not assume your plan carries over to the hub until Sony and Crunchyroll state the membership terms.
- Watch for an official Sony or PlayStation announcement with a launch date, country list, and membership details before making a purchase decision based on the hub.
The hub is a planned discovery destination with a target window, and the practical details will arrive closer to launch.
