The PS5’s SSD has changed some game design in visible, specific ways—but it has not transformed every game in the same way. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart uses near-instant world transitions as part of traversal; Returnal cuts the wait between death and another attempt; and Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores streams detailed scenery as players fly quickly across its landscape. Other developers have described broader design possibilities, but the available statements do not establish a distinct SSD-dependent mechanic for every game in a seven-title list.

What the PS5 SSD can—and cannot—tell us about game design

Sony lists the PS5 SSD’s raw read bandwidth as 5.5 GB/s and describes the system as able to stream assets rapidly. That is a hardware specification, not a measured loading-time result for any particular game. The player-facing effect depends on how a game’s developers use fast data access alongside the rest of the console’s hardware and software.

The clearest examples fall into three categories: a named mechanic that uses rapid transitions, a quality-of-life improvement that reduces waits, and a broader developer expectation about future streaming or world design. Those categories are not interchangeable: a developer saying the SSD influenced their thinking is not proof that a specific shipped mechanic depends on it.

Three shipped games with clear player-facing results

1. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart — dimensions become part of traversal

Rift Apart is the strongest example of the SSD’s influence showing up as a visible mechanic. PlayStation says the system can swap worlds in seconds, letting Ratchet and Rivet jump between dimensions and teleport without conventional loading screens. The transition is not merely a shorter pause before play resumes: moving between worlds is part of the action itself.

PlayStation’s explanation of how the PS5 made Rift Apart possible ties the rapid world changes to the console’s SSD and custom I/O system.

2. Returnal — less downtime between attempts

Returnal uses near-instant loading after death and rapid portal jumps between worlds. In a game built around repeated attempts, those shorter waits keep the rhythm moving: a failed run can lead back to action with less time spent watching a loading screen. That is a pacing and convenience benefit, not evidence that the SSD changes the game’s underlying roguelike structure.

3. Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores — detailed scenery during fast flight

In the Burning Shores expansion, players can fly quickly over a detailed landscape inspired by the Los Angeles area. Guerrilla describes fast streaming technology as necessary for handling the dense surroundings and the amount of scenery visible during aerial traversal. This is an example of SSD-era streaming supporting detail in motion; the source does not attribute the visual result to the SSD alone.

Guerrilla’s developer interview about Burning Shores discusses the streaming demands of fast flight.

Three more games offer design context, not equally specific case studies

PlayStation’s 2020 developer roundup includes comments associated with Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Far Cry 6. They help show how developers were thinking about the PS5’s SSD, but the statements surfaced there support broader or less detailed claims than the shipped mechanics above.

4. Demon’s Souls — a change in how developers thought about storage

The Demon’s Souls team said the SSD was changing how they thought about the hardware. That is evidence of a design mindset being reconsidered, but the cited passage does not identify a particular mechanic in the remake that can be assigned to the SSD.

Bestoss 2TB PCIe4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD with Heatsink, PS5 Storage, 7350MB/s
  • Cheetah-like explosive speed: The 2tb PS5 Storage Expansion boasts the racing performance of a cheetah, mainly used to accelerate program processing. With the explosive acceleration of 7350MB/s, it achieves a powerful speed and eliminates compatibility issues. Additionally, this 2tb nvme m.2 ssd supports real-time saving during 3D rendering and enables fast 4K game loading. The ps5 ssd with heatsink is also compatible with the PS5 game console, making it easy and worry-free to install and play.
  • Stable and outstanding performance: The ps5 internal storage expansion ssd features HMB + dynamic SLC cache, achieving a synergy between software and hardware. The 2tb ps5 hard drive ssd has a read/write speed of up to 7350/6600MB/s, providing ultimate burst power for efficient, stable, and smooth loading - an excellent choice for professionals.
  • Multi-layer heat dissipation structure design: The 2tb nvme m.2 ssd adopts unique dual-surface heat dissipation technology. Its innovative multi-layer internal design effectively increases the heat dissipation area compared to the standard single-layer heat sink. This structural advantage ensures excellent heat transfer and rapid heat dissipation. Additionally, it is equipped with a metal heat dissipation shell. The multi-layer structure heat dissipation design guarantees a stable and long-lasting operation at ultra-high speeds.
  • PCIe 4.0 interface compatibility: The 2tb ps5 memory storage SSD can achieve the maximum speed only through PCIe 4.0. For external hard drive enclosures, USB usually limits the speed.
  • Versatile applications for demanding users: Designed for gamers, video editors, and AI creators who require blazing-fast storage speeds for intensive workloads including 3D rendering, 4K gaming, and content creation tasks.

5. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales — faster loading and detailed assets

A developer comment associated with Miles Morales discusses the SSD in terms broader than near-instant loading and fast travel, including more rapid loading and display of detailed assets. It supports a general streaming and design point, not a specific SSD-dependent feature in the game.

6. Far Cry 6 — an expectation about future open worlds

Neil Hill, lead programmer on Far Cry 6, described the SSD as a game changer and anticipated future innovation in streaming and open-world design. That is a forward-looking view from a developer, not a claim that Far Cry 6 itself demonstrates a particular SSD-enabled mechanic.

All three comments appear in PlayStation’s 2020 developer roundup.

Why a seven-game list would overstate the evidence

The official sources cited here provide three specific, shipped examples with identifiable player-facing effects. The developer roundup adds useful context about three more games, but it does not substantiate a distinct SSD-related mechanic for each. A seventh title cannot be responsibly added from these sources without inventing or assuming a connection. The stronger conclusion is that the SSD enabled some striking transitions, reduced waits in other cases, and prompted developers to consider new possibilities—not that every PS5 game was redesigned around storage speed.
