If a PS5 game looks soft, harshly sharpened, or worse after upscaling, first check whether the problem affects one game or every game—and whether it is blur, bright edge halos, flicker, or an incorrect output mode. Those symptoms point to different causes. Compare the same scene from the same seat, changing one setting at a time; a 4K console output does not mean every game renders natively at 4K.

Why does my PS5 look blurry on my 4K TV?

Start by separating a stable image-quality complaint from a signal problem. Note whether the issue appears in one game or across several, and whether it affects gameplay, menus, or both. Soft detail or exaggerated edges may come from a game’s rendering and reconstruction or from the TV’s picture processing; flicker or a missing output mode calls for checking the HDMI signal path.

  • Soft or blurry: compare the game’s graphics modes and check the console’s reported output.
  • Oversharpened: look for halos or bright outlines around edges, then inspect the display’s sharpness and enhancement processing.
  • Flickering or wrong signal: check the display input, cable, port, and supported video mode.

Keep a fixed scene as your reference. A photo or written note of the initial appearance can help you reverse a change that does not help.

How do I check the PS5’s output resolution?

Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and inspect the connected HDMI device information and current video output signal. Sony says the PS5 detects the display’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically. Leave Resolution on Automatic as a baseline; if a known 4K display is receiving a different resolution than expected, check the display’s supported input modes and try 2160p.

A 2160p signal describes the console’s output, not necessarily the resolution at which a game renders every frame. The image also depends on the game and the rest of the display setup. For a supported 1440p display, use Test 1440p Output to check SDR and HDR at 60 or 120 Hz and VRR, then select 1440p if that is the intended mode. Sony’s resolution guidance is in its PS5 resolution settings guide.

Do not select 8K as a general troubleshooting step. PS5 Pro (CFI-7000 model group) is required, as are a compatible screen and the specified 60 Hz and DSC support.

Could the game’s graphics mode be causing the difference?

If a game offers Performance and Resolution presets, compare them in the same scene. Sony describes Performance Mode as prioritizing smoother motion and Resolution Mode as providing higher graphic quality. The exact resolution, frame rate, and reconstruction behavior depend on the individual game’s implementation; the preset names alone do not guarantee a particular rendering resolution.

Choose the mode that suits the trade-off you can see and feel: prioritize motion smoothness if that matters more, or try the higher-quality preset if you prefer image detail. Some games have additional graphics or upscaling options, but their labels and effects are title-specific. Sony’s explanation of the system-level presets is on its PS5 game presets page.

What should PS5 Pro owners check after upscaling?

For a PSSR-compatible PS5 game

On PS5 Pro, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality when the game supports PSSR. Sony says this control is available only on CFI-7000 model-group consoles and is on by default. Compare its other state in the same scene if the image issue appears tied to PSSR, then restore the original setting if there is no improvement. This is a test, not a guaranteed sharpness fix. See Sony’s resolution and PSSR settings guidance.

For a PS4 game running on PS5 Pro

Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games is a separate feature; it is not the PSSR control for supported PS5 games. Sony says it applies to PS4 games on CFI-7000 consoles and requires a screen supporting 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. If gameplay behaves unexpectedly with the feature enabled, Sony advises turning it off. The requirements and instruction are documented in its PS5 Pro image-quality guidance and PS5 backward-compatibility information.

How do I fix oversharpening or TV-side blur?

Consult the manual for the exact TV or monitor input. Depending on the model, relevant controls may include picture mode, scaling, sharpness, noise reduction, edge enhancement, or an HDMI enhanced-format setting. Change one option at a time and compare the same scene. There is no universal correct sharpness number: manufacturers use different scales, and Sony directs users to the display maker for settings needed to accept high-resolution signals. Its PS5 picture and sound troubleshooting page covers those display-side checks.

Do not change RGB Range as a general blur remedy. Sony says to adjust it only when an HDMI device is not sending RGB range information correctly. Likewise, HDR output is a targeted compatibility check, not a general cure: Always On converts unsupported games and apps to HDR output, while On When Supported leaves unsupported content in SDR. Use the documented video output settings when checking these options.

When should I check the HDMI cable or signal path?

Investigate the connection when the picture flickers, the expected resolution or refresh rate is missing, or the signal drops—not simply because a stable game image looks soft. Connect the PS5 directly to the display for a test, temporarily removing a receiver or other intermediate device. Check the display firmware, use its appropriate high-bandwidth HDMI port and settings, and try another port or known-good cable.

Sony recommends the included HDMI cable for PS5 high-performance features, while noting that older cables may also be used. For 4K at 120 Hz, Sony specifies the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for that output. A cable swap can help identify an unstable or bandwidth-limited signal, but it cannot correct softness produced by a game’s renderer or the TV’s sharpness processing. Follow Sony’s cable and output guidance and picture troubleshooting steps.

If 4K/120 Hz is blank or falls back to 1080p/120 Hz

Verify that the display supports the mode, its firmware is current, the cable is connected to the correct HDMI 2.1 input, and the PS5 output resolution and transfer rate are appropriate. The display may require a specific input setting to enable its full bandwidth.

If the image flickers

Sony suggests trying Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 to limit output. This can stabilize a marginal high-bandwidth signal, but the limitation may prevent some high-bandwidth formats from being used. Change it only as a signal test and check which output modes remain available afterward.

Which settings should I compare first?

What you notice First comparison What the result tells you
One game looks soft or harsh Compare that game’s available graphics modes in the same scene. A change that follows the game mode points toward the game’s implementation or its trade-off, not necessarily the console’s output resolution.
Several games look wrong, but the signal is stable Check the reported output, then review display scaling and picture processing. If display settings change the appearance across games, the display is a more likely source of the difference.
Only a supported PSSR game looks different on PS5 Pro Compare the Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting on and off. This checks a setting specific to supported PSSR titles; it does not establish that one state is always better.
A PS4 game looks different on PS5 Pro Check Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games separately. This is a distinct PS4-game feature with its own display requirements.
Flicker, signal loss, or missing 4K/120 Hz Test direct connection, another supported port, and another cable. A change in stability or reported mode implicates the signal path more than stable image softness does.

For each comparison, keep the scene and viewing position fixed, alter one setting, and note the result. Restore settings that make no visible improvement. If the symptom occurs only in one game after these checks, the game’s own rendering choices may be responsible; the console output setting cannot identify or change how that title reconstructs its image.
