To help a PS5 download faster, first check PlayStation Network status and test the console’s connection. Then address the link between the console and router: improve Wi-Fi placement or try wired LAN, restart the console and network equipment, and let downloads run in Rest Mode when you are away. These steps can fix local problems, but they cannot guarantee a faster download if your internet plan, household traffic, temporary congestion, or PlayStation Network is the limiting factor.
1. Check PlayStation Network and test the PS5 connection
Start by checking PlayStation Network status. If there is a service issue, changing settings on your console is unlikely to resolve it.
Next, run the PS5’s connection test: Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. This can help identify whether the console is having trouble connecting. A successful test does not guarantee that a particular game or update will download quickly; service congestion or other network conditions may still affect it. Sony’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting your internet service provider if the problem persists.
2. Check whether Wi-Fi is the weak link
If the PS5 uses Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them where practical. Walls, distance, and other sources of interference can make a wireless connection less reliable.

If you can connect the console to the router, try a wired LAN connection. Set it up at Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. Sony provides this option in its PS5 internet connection instructions.
Ethernet is most useful as a test when Wi-Fi may be the problem. It can improve reliability in a weak wireless setup, but it does not guarantee a higher download rate if your internet service, other household traffic, or PlayStation Network is limiting the connection. If the PS5 already has a stable wired connection, buying a cable or router is not a default fix.

3. Restart the PS5 and network equipment
- Restart the PS5, then retry the download.
- Turn off the router or modem. Where Sony’s troubleshooting steps specify it, wait at least five minutes before turning it back on.
- Allow the router or modem to finish restarting and reconnecting before testing the download again.
Restarting can clear a temporary local connection problem, but it will not resolve every slowdown. Sony’s network and error troubleshooting notes that temporary congestion can also affect downloads.
4. Let downloads continue in Rest Mode
Rest Mode is useful when you want a download to continue while you are away from the console. It is not a setting that increases the connection’s transfer rate.

- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- For automatic updates, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Select Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode, according to how you want updates handled. Auto-Download can be enabled by itself if you do not want to close a suspended game.

If the connection remains unreliable after checking service status, testing the console, and restarting equipment, contact your internet service provider or network administrator. They can help check the connection and router configuration; checking for router firmware updates may also be appropriate.

Sony documents DNS changes and other advanced settings for particular connection errors, not as universal download-speed fixes. Avoid changing DNS, MTU, IP, port-forwarding, or proxy settings on the assumption that they will make every download faster. Sony advises people unfamiliar with advanced network settings to consult their ISP or network administrator.
