Sony’s new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) brings AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5, so one reason to want a PS5 Pro is no longer exclusive to the Pro. But QSSR does not make the consoles equivalent: Sony says its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, whose performance and ray-tracing advantages still depend on the game.

What Sony announced about QSSR

On October 1, 2026, Sony announced QSSR, a new tier of AI upscaling derived from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for the standard PS5. Its stated aim is to improve image detail and stability. Those are Sony’s descriptions, not results from an independent image-quality test. Sony’s QSSR announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games getting the feature through patches, as an additional graphics option.

Sony has not announced a complete future game list or a rollout schedule beyond those titles. The announcement also does not say that QSSR will be available in every PS5 game. Check a game’s current patch notes and graphics options rather than assuming support.

Does QSSR make PS5 Pro less worth buying?

It can reduce one specific source of Pro FOMO: the feeling that AI-assisted image reconstruction is available only on the more expensive console. If you own a standard PS5 and mainly wanted that kind of upscaling in one of the announced games, QSSR gives you a new option without a console upgrade.

  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

It is not evidence that standard PS5 output now matches PS5 Pro. Sony’s Principal Engineer for Graphics R&D, Daniel Craig, said: “While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.” Sony has not published a controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR comparison, a resolution-equivalence figure, or a universal frame-rate result. Treat the distinction as an official positioning, not a measured head-to-head verdict. Sony’s QSSR announcement

What the Pro still offers—and what the claims mean

Sony markets PS5 Pro as combining PSSR with higher or more consistent frame rates and advanced ray tracing in compatible games. These features are not guaranteed in every title or graphics mode; Sony says Pro-enhanced features vary by game. Its current Ireland product page says more than 100 PS5 titles are enhanced for Pro, a dynamic product-page count rather than a count of QSSR games. PlayStation 5 Pro product page (Ireland)

When Sony introduced Pro in 2024, it said the console had 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. Those are manufacturer claims from the launch announcement, not independent benchmarks and not measurements of QSSR. Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro announcement

How to decide between staying on PS5 and upgrading

Base the decision on the games and modes you actually use, not on the arrival of an upscaling label alone. Sony’s pages describe features but do not provide a current price comparison or independent QSSR/PSSR test, so there is no sourced universal value verdict.

  • Check your games: QSSR has two named initial titles in Sony’s announcement. Pro-enhanced and PSSR-supported games form a separate, changing set; verify support for each title and its current patch.
  • Decide which image or performance trade-off matters to you: Sony describes QSSR as improving detail and image stability on standard PS5. Pro’s marketed performance and ray-tracing benefits are game-dependent, and the available modes may not deliver every benefit at once.
  • Consider your display and upgrade cost: Whether extra detail, smoother performance, or ray tracing is noticeable—and worth paying for—depends on the screen you use and the modes you prefer. Compare the current cost of upgrading against the specific games in your library.

For Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, QSSR is a reason to look at the patched PS5 graphics options, not by itself a reason to buy either game or to assume its output equals the Pro version.

QSSR is not the PS4-game image-quality setting

QSSR is the new upscaling option announced for supported PS5 games on the standard console. It is separate from Sony’s “Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games” setting, which applies to PS4 games played on PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. Sony says that setting requires a display capable of 2160p or 1440p at 60Hz; its location is Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony support: Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games
