Neither Proton VPN nor NordVPN is a universal winner. Proton is the better fit if you value open-source apps, a free plan, Secure Core routing, and Proton’s stated Swiss jurisdiction. NordVPN is a better fit if NordLynx and its tiered subscription bundles suit your needs. Independent scores are close, and a fair price comparison depends on your region, plan, and renewal rate.

Which is stronger for privacy?
Both providers make no-logs claims, but those claims should be treated as provider statements rather than proof that a VPN makes you anonymous. Proton says it is based in Switzerland, is not obligated under Swiss law to retain connection logs, and does not log online activity. It says its no-logs policy applies to free and paid users. Proton also says its apps are open source and regularly audited by security professionals. Proton’s no-logs policy and feature information explain its position.

NordVPN says it operates from Panama and reports six independent reviews of its no-logs policy, with the latest in 2025. That is the provider’s account of its review history; it does not establish that six reports are all public. NordVPN’s no-logs page describes its claims.

Jurisdiction, transparency, and audits are useful inputs, not guarantees against every legal request, endpoint tracking, or security risk. An audit or assurance engagement is limited by its scope, date, and available evidence. RTINGS’ own editorial verdict says Proton’s policies and business practices are slightly better for preserving privacy, while assigning the services equal security scores; that is an editorial assessment, not a finding that Proton is safer for every threat model.
How their security features differ
Proton VPN: open-source apps and Secure Core
Proton’s open-source apps make their code available for inspection, and the company says security professionals regularly audit them. Secure Core sends traffic through multiple Proton servers before it exits to the internet. Proton presents this as protection against network-based attacks. NetShield provides DNS filtering, while VPN Accelerator is another feature highlighted by the provider. These tools address different concerns; Secure Core’s extra routing is not automatically necessary for every user.

NordVPN: NordLynx and post-quantum rollout
NordVPN describes NordLynx as based on WireGuard and using double NAT to avoid storing identifiable data on the VPN server. It also says its post-quantum VPN cryptography rollout began with Linux in 2024; that statement does not mean every app or connection necessarily has the same support. NordVPN calls NordLynx its fastest secure VPN solution, but that is a vendor claim, not an independent result. NordVPN’s encryption page describes the technology.

Which is faster?
RTINGS gives NordVPN a speed score of 7.2/10 and Proton VPN 7.0/10 in its comparison updated July 10, 2026. The 0.2-point gap is small, and the ratings reflect RTINGS’ test method rather than your internet connection, location, device, or chosen server. RTINGS scores both at 8.6/10 for security.
Use these scores as a close comparison under one review’s methodology, not a promise that NordVPN will feel faster for you. Server distance, congestion, your baseline connection, and the protocol or settings you select can affect actual performance.

How to compare plans and prices fairly
Proton offers a free plan as well as VPN Plus and Proton Unlimited. Its paid tiers add features such as Secure Core, streaming support, P2P, and NetShield, according to its plan information. The pricing page retrieved for this comparison rendered its price and discount fields as “XX,” so there is no reliable current Proton dollar figure here for a direct price ranking. Check Proton’s pricing page and plan information for a live quote.
NordVPN’s US pricing page, observed October 7, 2026, listed a 2-year Basic offer at an introductory equivalent of $3.49 per month. The first charge was $94.23 for 27 months, including three extra months, and the listed renewal rate was $139.08 per year. The page also listed a 30-day money-back guarantee and said subscriptions renew automatically at the then-applicable renewal rate unless canceled. This was a region- and date-specific offer, not a guaranteed ongoing price. Check NordVPN’s US pricing page for current terms.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Compare equivalent tiers: a free plan is not directly comparable with a paid bundle.
- Compare the amount charged now and the renewal amount, not just a promotional monthly equivalent.
- Check the current offer in your own region before subscribing; prices and bundles can change.
Streaming and P2P: choose for the specific job
Streaming
Proton promotes streaming access and paid secure-streaming features. General streaming claims do not establish that a particular service or catalog will work from your location on a given day. The evidence available here does not provide a dated, reproducible side-by-side test for a particular catalog, so neither service can be named a universal streaming winner. Check the exact platform, country, and plan you need.
P2P and torrenting
Proton advertises P2P-optimized servers, and RTINGS lists P2P support for both providers while scoring Proton higher for torrenting in its comparison. That score is not a guarantee of higher throughput, and VPN access does not make file sharing lawful. If inbound connections or port forwarding are essential to your workflow, verify current support and plan limits directly before buying.
Quick Recap
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Proton VPN if its free tier, open-source apps, Secure Core routing, or stated Swiss jurisdiction align with your priorities.
- Choose NordVPN if NordLynx and its tiered bundle options fit your needs, and the current introductory charge and renewal price work for your budget.
- For streaming, decide only after checking the platform and location you care about; the available comparison does not establish a universal winner.
- For P2P, Proton’s P2P-server offering and higher RTINGS torrent score may be relevant, but confirm any specific connection feature you require.
