Choose Proton Pass if you want a useful free individual plan, hide-my-email aliases, or a Linux app. Choose Dashlane if you value its phishing and scam protection, bundled VPN, or a family plan with ten accounts. Neither is a universal winner: compare the features you will actually use, then check the annual price shown for your region before subscribing.

Which service has the better free plan?
Proton Pass has the clearer advantage if you want to try a password manager without paying. Its Free plan includes unlimited logins and devices, password generation, passkeys, password-health alerts for weak or reused passwords, and up to ten hide-my-email aliases. It also supports up to three 2FA items and importing logins from another manager.
Dashlane no longer offers a Free plan to new purchasers. Its current personal options are paid annual subscriptions: Premium for one person and Friends & Family for ten accounts. Dashlane’s plan-comparison help page, updated September 17, 2026, says it no longer sells several legacy plans—including Free—and no longer offers monthly subscriptions. Existing customers may have different legacy arrangements, so check your account terms rather than assuming the current new-customer lineup applies to you.

Proton Pass Plus and Family
Pass Plus adds unlimited hide-my-email aliases and 2FA codes, vault and link sharing, dark-web monitoring, file attachments, advanced account protection, Emergency Access, custom alias domains, and command-line interface access. Pass Family extends Plus to up to six users, with an admin panel for one or two plan managers.

Dashlane Premium and Friends & Family
Dashlane Premium is for one user; Friends & Family includes ten accounts. Dashlane lists unlimited password storage and devices, secure sharing, dark-web monitoring, AI-powered scam protection, password generation, 2FA, account-recovery options, password history, and secure notes with 1 GB of encrypted file storage on both personal plans. The Wi-Fi VPN is available to the Friends & Family plan manager, not to invited family members.
Dashlane’s personal plans are billed annually. Its plan page does not provide a stable numeric price in the available pricing text, and the company announced personal-plan price changes that began on its website and app stores in mid-February 2026. Check the price at checkout for your region and confirm the billing period before comparing it with Proton’s current offer. Dashlane says existing customers are notified before renewal if their price is changing.

Aliases, 2FA, sharing, and monitoring
Proton Pass is the more natural choice if aliases are central to your routine. Its free tier includes ten hide-my-email aliases, while Plus and Family provide unlimited aliases and can use custom alias domains. Plus also integrates unlimited 2FA codes into the password manager; Free supports up to three 2FA items.

Both services offer secure sharing and dark-web monitoring on their paid plans. Dashlane additionally includes phishing and scam protection on its current personal plans. These are different bundles, not a direct measure of which password vault is safer: decide whether you need disposable email addresses, integrated 2FA, monitoring, or active scam alerts.

Which works on your devices?
Proton lists apps for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as a web app and browser extensions. That makes it the more clearly documented option here if Linux support matters.
Dashlane documents password and passkey management through its web, Android, iPhone, and macOS apps. Feature availability can differ between apps, so check the platform-specific documentation for any feature you depend on rather than assuming the same tools appear everywhere.
Rank #4
Dashlane also documents passwordless login with a security key in its web app for personal plans. A FIDO2 security key is optional, not a requirement for ordinary password-manager use; verify a particular key’s compatibility before buying it.

Proton says saved passwords, passkeys, credit cards, usernames, and web addresses are protected with end-to-end encryption. Dashlane describes its own security architecture and lists features such as account 2FA and phishing alerts. Those vendor descriptions do not establish a direct cryptographic comparison, and they are not an independent audit of either service. Do not treat a longer feature list or a single security claim as proof that one is categorically more secure.
Best Value
- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
How to move from another password manager
Proton’s published migration workflow is to export logins from the old manager as a CSV file and import them into Proton Pass. An export is a sensitive file, so handle it carefully and avoid leaving it in an exposed downloads folder.
- Export your logins from the current password manager as a CSV file, following that service’s instructions.
- Import the file into Proton Pass using its import workflow.
- Review the imported records, attachments, passkeys, and 2FA details individually. Do not assume every item type transfers identically.
- Keep the original vault available until you have verified that the information you need is present and usable in the new one.
How to make the final choice
- Pick Proton Pass Free if you need a capable individual plan at no cost and its included alias and 2FA allowances are enough.
- Pick Proton Pass Plus if unlimited aliases, integrated 2FA, sharing, Emergency Access, or file attachments matter to you.
- Consider Proton Pass Family if your household needs up to six accounts and the Plus feature set.
- Pick Dashlane Premium if you want an individual paid plan with scam protection and VPN access.
- Consider Dashlane Friends & Family if ten accounts suit your household and the plan manager—not every member—is the person who needs VPN access.
- Compare the actual annual checkout totals for your region; do not rely on an old price or assume monthly billing is available for Dashlane’s current personal plans.
The right choice depends on your use case, not a blanket security ranking: Proton Pass is the stronger fit for free access, aliases, and Linux support, while Dashlane is the stronger fit for scam protection, a VPN bundle, and a ten-account plan.
