There is no clear universal winner between Proton Pass and 1Password. Proton Pass is the stronger fit to consider if you want a documented free option or a family plan for up to six users. 1Password is worth considering if Secret Key, Travel Mode, Watchtower alerts, and family vaults are priorities. Both offer ways to share information, but their features and plan limits are not identical.

How their plans differ

Proton lists free and paid Pass options. Its Pass Family plan supports up to six users, according to Proton’s pricing page and family-plan support page.

1Password’s personal plans are paid. Its Families plan can invite up to five family members, and 1Password says it includes unlimited vaults. See its personal plan details.

What each provider documents about security

Proton Pass: encryption beyond passwords

Proton says Pass encrypts fields beyond passwords, including usernames and website addresses. Its security page also describes passkeys as cryptographic key pairs that enable phishing-resistant sign-in. These are Proton’s descriptions of its product, not an independent comparative security assessment. See Proton Pass security details.

1Password: Secret Key and Travel Mode

1Password lists encrypted storage, a Secret Key, and Travel Mode among its security features. Its plan page also names Watchtower alerts, which flag security-related issues. These documented features do not establish that 1Password is more or less secure overall than Proton Pass; the vendors describe different protections, and the available material is not a comparative audit.

Sharing and family access

Both services describe ways to share information, but the available feature descriptions do not make their implementations equivalent.

  • Proton Pass: Proton lists secure sharing of individual items with anyone, including people who do not use Pass, as a paid feature. Its pricing page also lists dark-web monitoring among paid features.
  • 1Password: 1Password describes expiring links for sharing information temporarily with non-users on its product page. For family use, it describes shared vaults and guest accounts for limited information, such as a Wi-Fi password or instructions for a babysitter, in its family-sharing guide.

Before choosing based on sharing, check the current plan rules and the controls that matter to you: who can access an item, whether a link expires, and how family or guest access is managed. The cited descriptions do not establish matching recipient controls or identical eligibility limits.

Which one should you choose?

  • Consider Proton Pass if having a free option matters, you want to compare Proton’s documented encryption approach, or a family plan for up to six users better matches your household.
  • Consider 1Password if Secret Key and Travel Mode are priorities, or if you want the documented Families setup with shared vaults and guest access.
  • Compare both directly if your decision depends on price or ease of use. The available evidence does not establish comparable current prices or hands-on usability results.

For a practical decision, check the live price and terms for your country, then try the workflows you will rely on: importing existing passwords, autofill in your browser and on mobile, sharing with family, and account recovery. A product’s documented feature list cannot tell you which service will fit your devices and habits better.
