Prevent counterfeit semiconductors by making authenticity a controlled supply-chain outcome: buy from the original manufacturer or an authorized channel whenever possible; qualify alternatives with documented, risk-based controls; inspect and authenticate according to part and supplier risk; and immediately quarantine, investigate, disposition and report suspect material. A component that passes a basic incoming functional check can still be an unauthorized, substituted, altered or falsely represented part.
Why counterfeit semiconductors are an automotive risk
NASA’s procurement definition includes unauthorized reproduction, substitution or alteration presented as genuine. It also covers used parts sold as new and false claims about grade, lot, date code or performance. Counterfeiting is therefore an authenticity and traceability problem, not merely a defect that appears when a circuit fails.
Automotive semiconductors can control braking, airbags, steering, power management, sensing and communications. A latent authenticity problem may not appear during receiving inspection but can emerge under temperature, vibration, electrical stress or an emergency operating condition. The Semiconductor Industry Association has warned that counterfeit semiconductors can fail when airbags deploy or other safety-critical equipment is needed. That is an industry association statement, not a regulator’s measured failure rate.
Brand and financial exposure follow the technical risk. A recall, field failure, warranty campaign, regulatory investigation or supply interruption can affect customer trust and production continuity. The available official and industry materials do not establish a current automotive counterfeit-incident rate or a quantified automotive revenue-loss figure, so procurement decisions should not rely on an invented percentage.

“Critical safety components selling online for a fraction of their normal value should be a red flag that a product is not a legitimate, safety-tested component,” NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said in prepared remarks to the Automotive Anti-Counterfeiting Council on September 23, 2026.
The SIA has also cited a historical estimate that “<0.01% of legitimate semiconductor products will ever fail during operation in electronics systems.” The figure is approximately from 2013, is not automotive-specific, and has no named underlying dataset in the cited material. It must not be used as a current automotive baseline or compared numerically with counterfeit-part risk.
Start with the safest source and a documented exception path
Prefer the original manufacturer and authorized distribution
For production parts, the strongest first-line control is a transaction traceable to the original component manufacturer (OCM), the current design activity, or an authorized distributor. Preserve purchase orders, manufacturer part numbers, date and lot codes, certificates, and the chain of custody in the approved supplier record.
NASA describes an authorized supplier as one with a contractual arrangement or express written authority from the OCM or current design activity. “Authorized” should therefore be verified, not inferred from a website, logo, marketplace listing or a supplier’s self-description.

Use a controlled exception when authorized stock is unavailable
Obsolescence, allocation, a line-down emergency or an unavailable authorized channel may require independent distribution or another non-authorized source. Treat that as a higher-risk exception with a written approval, not as an equivalent sourcing route. Require evidence of the supplier’s prevention, detection, containment, adjudication and reporting processes before purchase, and define who can accept or reject the part.
Apply contract language to the actual buying context
DFARS counterfeit-part provisions apply to covered government acquisitions, not automatically to every private-sector automotive purchase. For covered contracts, contractors must obtain in-production parts from the OCM, an authorized supplier, or a supplier that sources exclusively through those channels. If a part is no longer in production or unavailable from authorized stock, a contractor-approved supplier may be used when qualified against established counterfeit-prevention standards and processes, including inspection, testing and authentication. Covered contractors must maintain an acceptable, risk-based detection-and-avoidance system.
NASA contract language similarly distinguishes authorized suppliers from contractor-approved suppliers and defines a suspect part as material supported by credible evidence that creates reasonable doubt about authenticity. Automotive companies can adopt comparable controls contractually, but should identify which clauses are binding for a particular customer, government contract or jurisdiction and which are voluntary company requirements.
Build a risk-based control plan
Rate the part, source and lifecycle together
- Part criticality: classify safety, regulatory, cybersecurity, power and production impact. A braking or airbag device warrants stronger evidence than a non-critical convenience function.
- Lifecycle status: flag obsolete, end-of-life, allocated and unusually scarce devices, where brokered supply is more likely.
- Source risk: consider authorization, geographic and ownership changes, traceability gaps, marketplace purchasing, unusual pricing and prior nonconformities.
- Evidence available: assess whether lot history, manufacturer confirmation, samples, test data and a credible return path exist before release.
Qualify suppliers before the first urgent order
Audit the supplier’s quality system and counterfeit-avoidance procedure. Confirm control of incoming material, segregation, staff competence, subcontractors, records, complaint handling, suspect-part escalation and destruction or return decisions. Require notification of changes in ownership, facility, source, packaging or testing provider.

For non-authorized suppliers, SAE ARP6178A provides tools for assessment. Do not treat an audit report or certificate as proof that every part in a shipment is genuine; evaluate the scope, date, sites and products covered.
Make traceability a release condition
Match the physical device and packaging to the purchase order and manufacturer documentation. Record manufacturer, full ordering code, package, lot or date code, quantity, source, inspection results, test reports and final disposition. Keep retained samples where the risk and contract justify them. A complete record allows a rapid stop-ship and targeted recall instead of a plant-wide search.
How to inspect and authenticate a semiconductor
No single visual check, certificate, electrical test or certification program guarantees authenticity. The appropriate combination depends on the component, package, risk and applicable engineering standards.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Check documents and chain of custody
- Reconcile the invoice, purchase order, manufacturer ordering code, package quantity and date or lot information.
- Check whether the seller is authorized for that manufacturer and product, or document the approved exception.
- Look for unexplained breaks in custody, mixed lots, relabeled reels, missing manufacturer paperwork or test reports that cannot be independently attributed to the lot.
- Compare declared country, factory, package and marking information with the manufacturer’s published data or direct confirmation.
2. Perform controlled receiving inspection
- Photograph labels, reels, trays, moisture-barrier bags, seals and markings before opening.
- Inspect package finish, pin or ball condition, lead plating, mold compound, logos, font, alignment, date codes and evidence of sanding, resurfacing, blacktopping or remarking.
- Check for mixed manufacturer lots, inconsistent packaging, damaged moisture indicators and contamination.
Visual anomalies are evidence for escalation, not proof by themselves. Genuine factory variation can exist, and sophisticated counterfeiters can reproduce markings.

- Quickly Tests Low Voltage up to 12 Volts.
- A heavy duty circuit tester for lifetime use.
- The probe, handle, cord and clamp are reinforced for extra durability.
- Comes with a strain relief spring on the cord. Cord is 49".
3. Select tests through engineering judgment
Use a graduated plan based on risk and the failure modes being investigated. Possible methods include dimensional and package inspection, marking or surface analysis, x-ray or other imaging, electrical parameter testing, burn-in or environmental stress, decapsulation and die or bond-wire examination, and comparison with a known-good sample. Define sampling, acceptance limits, laboratory competence, calibration and destructive-test authorization in advance.
The cited standards do not prescribe one universal test recipe for automotive semiconductors. A test that demonstrates electrical function under one condition does not establish correct die origin, grade, lifetime, prior use or compliance with the specified revision.
4. Escalate inconclusive results
Stop release when evidence conflicts or the test cannot answer the authenticity question. Obtain manufacturer or authorized-distributor confirmation where possible, use an independent competent laboratory for specialized analysis, and have engineering, quality and compliance jointly decide whether additional testing is proportionate to the risk.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to do with a suspect or confirmed counterfeit part
- Contain it immediately. Place the lot and any related inventory on quality hold. Block use, shipment, rework and automatic replenishment in the enterprise system.
- Preserve evidence. Secure packaging, labels, purchase records, photographs, samples, test data, communications and system transactions. Maintain chain of custody for any laboratory work.
- Define the affected population. Trace the same supplier, purchase order, lot, date code, production line, work-in-process, finished vehicle and shipped service inventory. Expand the hold when records cannot separate suspect from unaffected material.
- Investigate and adjudicate. Compare documents and physical findings, seek OCM or authorized-channel input, review supplier controls and determine whether the material is counterfeit, nonconforming but genuine, or unresolved.
- Make a controlled disposition. Options may include verified replacement, return under an approved evidence-preservation process, destruction, rework or documented use-as-is only where competent engineering and contractual authorities permit it. Do not relabel, mix or quietly return suspect parts to circulation.
- Report and correct. Notify the customer, contract authority, internal compliance function and other required parties under applicable clauses. Issue supplier corrective action, update the risk rating and purchasing controls, and assess whether a field action or regulatory notification is required.
Standards and their distinct roles
These SAE documents are frameworks with different scopes; they do not all directly govern an automotive OEM, and certification is not a guarantee that an individual component is authentic. Verify the current edition and applicability before making them contractual requirements.

How to compare a supplier when authorized sourcing is impossible
| Decision axis | Questions to document |
|---|---|
| Authorization and traceability | Can the supplier prove authorization or a continuous chain back to the OCM, and can each lot be separated? |
| Process maturity | Are prevention, detection, quarantine, adjudication, reporting, training and record-retention controls documented and used? |
| Part and lifecycle risk | How critical is the device, and is it obsolete, scarce, relabeled, unusually discounted or otherwise high risk? |
| Authentication evidence | Are samples, manufacturer confirmations, test methods, laboratory qualifications and acceptance limits available before release? |
| Independent assurance | What audits or certifications exist, which sites and products do they cover, and when were they performed? |
| Recovery and accountability | Are liability, notification, returns, replacement, evidence preservation and incident-reporting duties explicit? |
Choose the supplier only after engineering, quality, procurement and compliance agree that the residual risk is acceptable and the exception is documented.
Measure whether the program is working
- Percentage of production spend and safety-critical parts sourced through verified authorized channels.
- Percentage of suppliers with current risk assessments, audits and signed counterfeit-control clauses.
- Receiving lots held for traceability or authenticity concerns, with time to disposition.
- Test coverage and turnaround for high-risk or obsolete parts.
- Repeat findings by supplier, manufacturer, package, lot or facility.
- Time from suspicion to containment, customer notification and verified replacement.
These measures show control performance without pretending that an absence of detected counterfeits proves an absence of counterfeits.
