To keep someone from taking over your WhatsApp account, enable two-step verification and add a recovery email, check linked devices for unfamiliar sessions, and never share your registration code or verification PIN. If you have already lost access, re-register your phone number with the six-digit code sent by SMS or phone call.
1. Add two-step verification and a recovery email
Two-step verification adds an authentication step after your phone number is registered. WhatsApp recommends adding an email address you can access so you have a recovery option. The menu wording and available authentication method may vary as WhatsApp rolls out changes from a six-digit PIN to a password.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings (on some phones, tap the three-dot menu first), then Account and Two-step verification.
- Follow the prompts to turn it on and set the requested PIN or password.
- Add and verify an email address that you control, if prompted.
WhatsApp describes this as optional added security; it does not replace the six-digit code used to register your phone number. These settings also cannot remove an intruder if you have already lost access to your account. See WhatsApp’s account security tips for its current guidance.
2. Check linked devices and remove unfamiliar ones
A linked device can access your account through an active session. Review the list regularly and log out anything you do not recognize. Use the official WhatsApp app, and avoid unofficial clients or websites.

- Open WhatsApp and select Linked devices. On some phones, this is in the three-dot menu; on iPhone, it is in Settings.
- Check the device names and last-active information shown in the list.
- Tap a device you do not recognize and choose Log out.

3. Keep registration codes and verification credentials private
The six-digit registration code is needed to activate or re-register your phone-number account. Never give it to anyone—not a friend, a stranger, or someone claiming to be WhatsApp support. Treat your two-step verification PIN or password as private, too. If you receive a code you did not request, do not share it; a code alone does not mean you should hand over control of the account.

WhatsApp’s registration and two-step verification guidance explains how these credentials work. Be wary of messages pressuring you to send a code or reveal your verification credentials.

If someone has already taken over your account
Use WhatsApp’s recovery process rather than relying on a password change alone. Re-register your phone number in WhatsApp using the six-digit code delivered by SMS or phone call. WhatsApp says entering this code logs out other devices using the account.

- Open WhatsApp and register your phone number again.
- Enter the six-digit code you receive by SMS or phone call. Do not share it with anyone.
- If WhatsApp asks for a two-step verification PIN you do not know, you may have to wait seven days before you can recover the account.
- Tell your contacts through another channel that your account may have been used to impersonate you.
WhatsApp says messages already delivered to your device remain there and cannot be read by someone merely re-registering your account on another device. Re-registering does not, by itself, restore chat history from a backup; backup availability is separate. Read WhatsApp’s compromised-account recovery instructions for details.
