Look at the low-beam chamber through the headlamp’s clear outer cover: a distinct round lens in front of the light source is the usual sign of projector optics. A broad, exposed reflective bowl without a separate lens points to a reflector. Check the low beam specifically; a headlamp assembly can combine different optical elements.
How to check your headlight

Park the vehicle and turn the lamps off.

Stand in front of the headlamp and look through its clear outer cover at the low-beam chamber. Identify the element that produces the low beam, not a separate high beam, daytime-running light, or turn signal.

Look for a distinct round lens between the light source and the outer cover. That lens is the common visible cue for a projector. If the low beam instead sits in a broad reflective bowl with no separate lens, it is likely a reflector design.

If the chamber is difficult to see, confirm the headlamp type in the owner’s manual or manufacturer parts information for the vehicle’s exact year, market, and trim.

What the visual clues mean

These are visual indicators, not a substitute for vehicle-specific documentation. Styling, dirt, a cloudy cover, or multiple optics can make the chamber hard to classify.
Projector and reflector describe optics, not bulb type
Projector and reflector refer to how the headlamp’s optics shape and direct light. They do not mean halogen, HID, or LED. A bulb’s technology or color is therefore not a dependable way to identify the optical design. Philips’ June 2017 LED-HL installation instructions describe a product for use with both projector and reflector headlights, illustrating that the categories are separate. Why one round element may not identify the low beam
A headlamp assembly can contain several lamps and optical elements. A round lens could belong to a high beam or another function rather than the low beam you are trying to classify. Follow the low-beam chamber itself; do not label the whole assembly from whichever element looks most prominent.

If the low-beam optics are obscured or ambiguous, use the owner’s manual or manufacturer parts information matched to the vehicle’s model year, market, and trim. Equipment may vary between versions. Ford’s online manual distinguishes projector and reflector assemblies in its bulb-replacement instructions and says the manual supplied with the vehicle should be treated as the primary source for that vehicle’s information. Why a wall-beam test is not a definitive identification method
A beam on a wall can help assess aim and cutoff, but beam shape alone does not conclusively identify projector optics. Official inspection guidance treats beam pattern and aim as inspection characteristics, and applicable criteria depend on lamp type and rules. Seeing a projector lens does not establish that an LED or HID replacement bulb is compatible with the vehicle’s lamp. Compatibility depends on the specific lamp and vehicle requirements. Regulations also vary by jurisdiction: the cited UK guidance addresses source compatibility and treats complete replacement lamp units separately from bulb conversions. Verify requirements for your location and consult vehicle-specific documentation before changing a light source.
