Project Overpowered – Skyblock is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.12.2. Install the same pack release on every client and the server, then allocate memory according to your group and view distance: published guidance ranges from 4–5 GB for a client and server to 8 GB for a hosting configuration.
What Project Overpowered – Skyblock is
Project Overpowered – Skyblock is a beginner-focused, quest-driven pack by SimplyBlizz for Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. Its CurseForge listing describes more than 200 quests and approximately 150 mods. The design goal is to make skyblock progression less grind-heavy while still giving you a long technology and resource progression path.
Major systems include Project E/EX for EMC-based transmutation, Mekanism, Chickens, Applied Energistics 2, Botania, Roots and Industrial Foregoing. The endgame uses custom Modular Machinery content and altered recipes, so recipes and progression should be treated as pack-specific rather than assumed from another 1.12.2 modpack.
SimplyBlizz describes the pack as “a beginner-friendly skyblock modpack with over 200+ quests about, well, as the name tells about becoming overpowered.” That description matches the practical progression: the quest books point you toward the next task, while EMC and the SBC shop provide shortcuts and rewards as your island develops.

How the starting world works
A deliberately empty sky
The default world is classic skyblock. No villages, structures or neighboring islands generate automatically. You begin on a small island with a 3×3 bedrock platform beneath the starting grass. Because the normal day/night cycle remains active, hostile mobs can spawn at night unless you secure the island with lighting and other defenses.
Falling into the void is not an automatic permanent death in this pack. The player is returned to the island with damage, so early construction should still include railings, slabs or other fall-prevention measures, but a single mistake does not necessarily erase your progress.

The official wiki identifies three important destinations: the Nether, the End and a Mining Dimension. The Mining Dimension is opened with a portal made from portal frames and ignited using a mining multitool. The End is reached through a stronghold located in the Mining Dimension rather than by assuming that a conventional overworld stronghold will be available in your starter sky.
Make dimension access part of your server test before inviting a group. A correctly installed world should let you follow the pack’s intended route from the island to the Mining Dimension and then to the End.
Early progression: quests, pebbles and EMC
Start with the quest books
Books in the starting inventory provide quest information and progression tasks. Read them before spending scarce materials: the early chapters explain which blocks, machines and resources the pack expects you to create. The reduced-grind design does not mean that every recipe is standard; quest rewards and altered recipes are part of the intended route.

Collect the first resources
The server guide’s opening example is deliberately simple. Shift and right-click grass or dirt to collect pebbles, then use those pebbles to make cobblestone. This gives a repeatable source of basic material before you have a conventional cobblestone generator or larger automation setup.
Reach the first EMC milestone
The first chapter requires 50,000 EMC. EMC is the resource value used by Project E/EX, so the target is not merely a count of cobblestone blocks. Keep early outputs available for conversion and follow the quest sequence rather than dumping every item into a machine as soon as you obtain it. Once you have the required value, the following chapters can open more efficient production and automation paths.
Use the SBC shop deliberately
SBC currency is tied to quest progress. The shop can offer randomized mob spawn eggs, enchantments, blocks and other rewards. Because the inventory is randomized, treat SBC as a way to fill gaps or accelerate a project, not as a guaranteed source of one specific item. Check your current quest rewards and the shop together before spending currency.
Choose a server method
Managed hosting
A managed host is the shortest route for a group that does not want to maintain an operating system, firewall and backup routine. The important requirement is not a host’s generic “modded” label but support for the exact Project Overpowered – Skyblock release and Forge loader you intend to run.

- Stop the server completely.
- Open the panel’s game-file, modpack or version selector.
- Search for Project Overpowered – Skyblock.
- Select one exact release and let the installer finish before starting the server.
- Record the selected release so every player installs the same one.
Do not change the pack or game version while the server is running. A panel may expose several releases, and configuration defaults can change between them. The release documentation records defaults such as online mode and spawn protection, so check those settings after installation instead of assuming that an older setup guide still applies.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, upgrades, backups and network settings, but you also own every failure point. Use the server files supplied with the specific pack release when they are available. Uploading an ordinary client folder can omit server libraries, scripts or configuration that the dedicated server expects.
Plan for all of the following before opening the server to the internet:
- An operating system on which the required Forge server can run.
- A Java installation compatible with that release and loader; confirm the requirement in the release documentation rather than copying a version from a different pack.
- A firewall rule and router port forwarding if players connect from outside your home network.
- Scheduled world and configuration backups stored somewhere other than the live server directory.
- A way to monitor memory use, crashes and disk space.
Run the server privately first. Confirm that the quest book appears, the island spawn is correct, dimensions work and your intended players have the permissions they need.
Install the client and connect
Every player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge loader and Project Overpowered release as the server. The safest approach is to install the pack through CurseForge or another launcher that can import the same release, launch that profile once, then connect with the address supplied by the server.

- Install Minecraft Java Edition for PC and a launcher that supports Forge modpacks.
- Find Project Overpowered – Skyblock in the launcher and select the exact release chosen for the server.
- Let the launcher download the complete profile, then start it once so the instance creates its configuration files.
- Close the game if you need to adjust memory or launcher settings.
- Start the matching profile again, choose multiplayer, enter the server address and connect.
Do not mix a newer or older pack release with the server simply because both display “1.12.2.” The Minecraft version is only one part of the compatibility key; Forge, mod versions, scripts and configuration files can all differ between releases.
How much RAM does the pack need?
There is no authoritative universal minimum or independent benchmark for this pack. Published recommendations vary because player count, loaded entities, view distance and the contents of the selected release all change memory demand.

Use those figures as provider guidance, not a promise that every world will perform identically. Allocate enough memory for the server and leave the host operating system headroom. On a client, increase the launcher allocation only as needed: excessive allocation does not automatically fix CPU, disk, network or mod errors.

If the process reaches its memory limit or repeatedly crashes during loading, compare the allocation with the selected release’s requirements and inspect the server log for the first error rather than the final cascade.

Choose based on responsibility, not only monthly price. A home server can be inexpensive when you already have suitable hardware and a stable connection, but you must handle upgrades, port forwarding, backups, outages and troubleshooting. For a first shared world, managed hosting is usually easier if the panel supports the pack directly. Self-hosting is reasonable when you need full file access, already understand Forge server administration or want to keep the world on local hardware.
Test checklist before inviting players
- Launch the server with no invited players and confirm it reaches a stable “ready” state.
- Join with a client using the identical release and verify that the quest books are present.
- Break and place blocks on the starter island, then test the void-return behavior in a controlled way.
- Wait through a night cycle to confirm that lighting and mob-spawn expectations match your plan.
- Check that the Mining Dimension portal can be made with portal frames and a mining multitool.
- Confirm that dimension travel, permissions and return paths work before valuable items are moved.
- Make a backup, restore it to a separate test location if your host allows it, and record where the live backup files are stored.
This small private test catches mismatched files and permission errors before they affect a full group.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
The client is rejected immediately
Compare the complete pack release and Forge loader on both sides. “Minecraft 1.12.2” alone is not sufficient. Reinstall the launcher profile from the same release selected in the server panel, and avoid copying individual mods from another instance.
The server stops during startup
Read the first meaningful error in the server log. Check that you used the release’s server files, that Java meets the release requirement and that the allocated memory is sufficient for startup. Replacing the entire folder with a client instance can create missing-library or configuration errors.
Players cannot reach the server
For self-hosting, verify that the server process is listening on the configured port, the operating-system firewall permits it and the router forwards that port to the correct machine. For managed hosting, use the address and port shown in the panel and check whether the server is actually running.
Progression appears missing
Confirm that the world was created with the intended pack release and that the player has the correct permissions. The starting books and quest data are part of the pack’s progression; a world or profile copied from another installation may not contain the expected state.

Performance worsens as the island grows
Reduce view distance, limit unnecessary loaded chunks and control large numbers of entities or machines. Compare memory use with the provider’s published range, but do not treat 8 GB as a universal fix: CPU load, entity counts and chunk activity can be the actual bottleneck.

- A launcher capable of installing Forge modpacks.
- The exact Project Overpowered – Skyblock release selected by the server owner.
- A Forge-compatible server running that same release for multiplayer.
- Enough memory for the chosen player count and view distance, using provider recommendations as a starting point rather than a benchmark.
