A programmable metallization cell (PMC) is a type of nonvolatile resistive memory that stores information by forming or dissolving a tiny metal filament inside a solid electrolyte. A connected filament creates a low-resistance state; breaking it returns the cell to a high-resistance state. PMC is closely related to technologies called electrochemical metallization memory (ECM) and conductive bridge RAM (CBRAM).
What is a programmable metallization cell?
A PMC is a memory cell whose resistance changes through an electrochemical process. It retains its resistance state without continuous power, which is why it is classified as nonvolatile memory.
The names PMC, ECM, and CBRAM are used for closely related forms of electrochemical filamentary resistive memory. The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors groups them under electrochemical metallization bridge ReRAM, describing the use of small quantities of metal in a thin dielectric film or solid electrolyte to switch resistance. What is inside a PMC?
A typical cell has three main parts: an electrochemically active electrode, an ion-conducting solid electrolyte, and a comparatively inert counter-electrode. Silver and copper are common active metals in the cited technology roadmap, although device materials and geometry vary.
#1 Best Overall
- A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
- Active electrode: Supplies metal atoms that can be oxidized into ions.
- Solid electrolyte: Provides a medium through which metal ions can move.
- Counter-electrode: Supports reduction and metal deposition as the conductive filament grows.
How does PMC memory work?
Writing changes the cell’s resistance by controlling whether a nanoscale conductive metal bridge connects its electrodes.
SET: forming the conductive bridge
During a SET operation, an applied bias oxidizes metal at the active electrode. The resulting positive ions migrate through the electrolyte and are reduced near the counter-electrode. Deposited metal grows into a conductive filament, creating the low-resistance, or ON, state.

RESET: breaking or dissolving the bridge
During RESET, the filament is broken or dissolved, moving the cell back toward its high-resistance, or OFF, state. The exact transport and reset mechanism depends on the electrode and electrolyte materials and on operating conditions; polarity and programming requirements are not universal across PMC designs.

A memory circuit can interpret the cell’s resistance as stored information. Some research designs can also be programmed to intermediate resistance levels, but multilevel storage is a feature of particular implementations, not a guarantee of every PMC.
Rank #3
- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

What is PMC used for?
Research has explored PMC for nonvolatile memory and switching, as well as multilevel storage and electronic-synapse behavior. Those research applications do not establish that a general-purpose PMC memory product is currently available to consumers.

PMC is a device family, not one fixed specification. Comparisons are meaningful only when tied to a particular cell design, test conditions, and—where relevant—its array circuitry.

- Materials: Electrode composition and electrolyte affect ion transport and filament formation.
- Programming behavior: Check SET and RESET polarity, programming voltage and current, and switching speed.
- Resistance contrast: The ON/OFF resistance ratio affects how easily the two states can be distinguished.
- Reliability: Compare endurance, retention, and variability using the same definitions and conditions.
- Array architecture: Passive arrays can face sneak-path currents, so cell behavior alone does not establish array-level performance.
There is no single voltage, speed, endurance, retention, or scaling figure that applies to all PMC devices. Treat numerical specifications as design- and test-specific.
