ZeroNote review
A capable open-source encrypted notes app, limited by its web-only scope and archived status.

ZeroNote is an open-source web app for storing encrypted notes, passwords, bookmarks, 2FA secrets, documents, and personal knowledge. It is aimed at people who want local browser storage, offline access, Markdown editing, attachments, search, and a portable encrypted backup format. Client-side AES encryption uses a master password, while smart tags organize passwords, bookmarks, notes, and secrets. TOTP generation adds a useful option for tagged 2FA secrets.
Its feature set covers more than plain note-taking. ZeroNote supports images, PDFs, and documents as attachments, and its search works across note titles and content. Encrypted JSON export and import provide a direct backup path. For multi-device access, it offers peer-to-peer synchronization through WebRTC, S3-compatible synchronization and backups through AWS S3 or MinIO, and Nostr synchronization. The project also supports self-hosting through Vercel, Netlify, or Docker, giving technically inclined users control over deployment and storage choices.
The main concern is project status rather than feature breadth: the repository was archived on July 16, 2026, and states that ZeroNote is no longer maintained, with development and support stopped. That makes it a poor fit for buyers who need an actively supported product or broad native platform coverage. ZeroNote is better suited to users who can accept an archived web application, understand browser-based storage and synchronization choices, and value open-source encryption, attachments, and export. Buyers seeking ongoing maintenance should choose an alternative instead.
