Our verdict on youtube-dl

youtube-dl is a free, open-source command-line program for downloading videos from YouTube and many other supported platforms. It is aimed at technically comfortable users who prefer local tools over a graphical workflow. The program runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports sources including YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Facebook, and SoundCloud. Its core workflow is URL-based, with controls for choosing video and audio formats, selecting playlist items, and saving output with configurable filename templates.

The feature set covers more than single-video downloads. youtube-dl can retrieve full playlists, process multiple URLs from a batch file, and download manual or automatically generated subtitles where available. It can also extract audio and convert it into formats such as AAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, or WAV. For media organization, it supports embedding subtitles, thumbnails, and metadata. Video outputs include formats such as 3GP, FLV, MP4, and WebM, giving users control over both the source selection and the resulting files.

There is no paid tier to evaluate: the project is released into the public domain and is available as a free download. The main stable release is listed as version 2021.12.17 and described as old, while a later 2025.11.26 build appears in the official nightly repository. That release context matters for buyers who prioritize current maintenance signals. Choose youtube-dl if you want a configurable, script-friendly downloader with playlist, batch, subtitle, and audio capabilities. Choose another option if you need a guided graphical interface or prefer a clearly current stable release.
