Our verdict on YOUKU
YOUKU brings dramas, films, variety shows and anime together in a streaming service for viewers who want a mix of entertainment rather than a single genre. It offers free and VIP content through web, iOS and Android, with TV apps also described. The service suits viewers willing to pay for access to VIP episodes and selected viewing benefits, while free content offers a way to watch without a membership. Content and subscription availability depend on location and device.
VIP focuses on access and viewing flexibility: membership includes VIP episode access, ad skipping for eligible content, and early access to selected programs. Eligible titles can stream in 1080p, and selected content can be downloaded for offline viewing on supported devices in supported jurisdictions. Those limits matter for travelers or anyone choosing a service primarily for offline playback; downloads are not presented as a catalog-wide feature. International VIP accounts permit concurrent viewing on up to two devices, which sets a clear ceiling for shared use.
YOUKU has a paid membership model as well as free content, but fees vary by jurisdiction and device. In China, the service also offers SVIP with benefits beyond VIP, under separate membership terms; international VIP and China VIP/SVIP benefits and concurrency rules differ. That makes it worth checking which service and membership apply to your location before subscribing. Choose YOUKU if its mix of drama, film, variety and anime matches your viewing habits and its VIP benefits fit your needs. Look elsewhere if you require consistent offline access across titles or more than two simultaneous streams on an international VIP account.
