XTrans review
A free desktop tool for annotating speakers, turns, and overlapping speech by hand.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
XTrans is a desktop tool for manually transcribing and annotating audio recordings. Researchers working with multi-speaker material can segment recordings into turns, sentences, and other units; identify speakers; and label transcript structure such as topics. It supports overlapping speakers and multiple audio files, making it suited to annotation work where speaker changes and segment boundaries matter. Its workflow is manual rather than automatic, so it is a better fit for deliberate annotation than for quickly generating a draft transcript.
The annotation controls are its clearest strength. XTrans includes quality-control functions, color-coded speaker and segment labels, configurable keyboard shortcuts, and multilingual and bidirectional text input. It also supports virtual speaker channels and imports some XML transcript formats, including Transcriber TRS. These capabilities make it relevant to researchers who need structured labels and control over how speech is represented. Buyers seeking automatic transcription or an AI-assisted first draft should look elsewhere; XTrans focuses on human annotation.
According to the LDC product brochure, XTrans is open source, free, and released under GPLv3 for Linux and Windows. It is desktop software rather than a hosted service, and its stated transcript export is tab-delimited format. That narrow export choice may constrain workflows that depend on other transcript formats or broader integrations. Choose XTrans if manual, multi-speaker annotation and quality checks matter more than automation or flexible export. It is less suitable for teams seeking a cloud-based transcription workflow or broader format support.
