xNVSE is a script extender and plugin framework for Fallout: New Vegas. It is aimed at modders and developers who need broader scripting capabilities, runtime extensions, or GECK plugin support. Rather than functioning as a conventional mod manager, it installs DLL and executable files in the game directory and launches through nvse_loader.exe or FalloutNV.exe with the 4GB Patcher. The project supports both Steam and GOG versions of the game on Windows.

Its main strength is depth within a narrow role. xNVSE provides an interface for developing plugins, supports builds that run at game runtime or in GECK, and expands the scripting layer used by Fallout: New Vegas modifications. It also does not modify executable files permanently on disk, which suits users who want an extension that works through its loader. Releases and changelogs are provided through GitHub, while the source code is available for developers building their own extensions.

The trade-off is scope. xNVSE addresses scripting and plugin development rather than broader mod installation, organization, or management, so users seeking a complete mod-management workflow will need a different type of tool. Its compatibility is also specific: coverage is limited to Fallout: New Vegas on Windows, and Xbox Game Pass and Bethesda.net versions are unsupported. Choose xNVSE when scripting expansion and plugin development are the priority, especially with a Steam or GOG installation. Choose an alternative when you need a general-purpose mod manager, another game, or a different platform.

xNVSE pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Expands scripting and supports runtime and GECK plugin builds
    • Works with Steam and GOG versions on Windows
    • Open source, free, and does not permanently modify executable files
  • Where it doesn't
    • Supports only Fallout: New Vegas
    • Windows-only coverage limits platform choice
    • Not a general-purpose mod manager
