Our verdict on Xcas
Xcas is a free, GPL3-licensed computer algebra system built around the Giac calculation engine. It is intended for mathematics learning, teaching, research and computer-algebra development, with tools for both symbolic and numeric work. Core capabilities include arithmetic, integration, derivation, limits, equation solving and factorization. It also provides two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphing, interactive geometry, spreadsheets, statistics, equation editing and physical-unit conversion. With web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android availability, Xcas suits users who want a cross-platform mathematics environment rather than a single-purpose calculator.
Its breadth is the main reason to choose it. Xcas brings together computer algebra, visualization, dynamic geometry, statistical calculations and programming in one application. The two-dimensional equation editor supports sub-expressions, while online documentation includes syntax help, examples, keyword search and completion. Programming options cover French, Python-compatible, Maple, MuPAD and TI89-compatible syntax. The system also connects with C++, Python, Julia, Java and JavaScript, giving it a wide fit for mathematical instruction, exploration and development. Users who need only basic arithmetic may find this scope more than they need.
Platform coverage is another clear strength. Native versions are available for Windows, macOS and Linux/Unix, and Xcas also runs in compatible web browsers, including offline browser use. That combination supports desktop, mobile and browser-based workflows without changing the product’s central focus on computer algebra. The tradeoff is that browser access depends on compatibility, while the range of programming syntaxes and mathematical tools can require users to select the right workflow for each task. Choose Xcas for a free, broad CAS with graphing, geometry and programming support; choose a narrower calculator when advanced symbolic and visualization features are unnecessary.
