X Minecraft Launcher is an open-source desktop launcher for Minecraft Java, with experimental Bedrock workflows also described. It is aimed at players who keep multiple versions or modded setups and want instance management, modpack browsing, and troubleshooting in one application. Separate instances keep versions, mods, and launch settings organized; the launcher is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Its modpack workflow is a central strength: the built-in catalog covers Modrinth, CurseForge, and FTB, and users can import .zip or .mrpack files by dragging and dropping them. XMCL supports Forge, Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, OptiFine, and LabyMod. It can manage compatible Java runtimes, search and group installed mods, inspect dependencies, check for updates, and export in Modrinth or CurseForge formats. Shared resource storage uses links or hardlinks to reduce duplicate disk usage. This breadth should suit modpack users who move between loaders or maintain several instances; players looking only for a simple vanilla launcher may not need the extra controls.

Troubleshooting tools include crash logs, diagnostic reports, and AI-assisted help, giving modpack users a path to investigate launch problems. The project is free and open source, with downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux. One platform caveat is that automatic package updates are specifically documented for Windows APPX/AppInstaller; that update behavior should not be assumed for every distribution format. Choose XMCL for its catalog coverage, Java management, and mod-focused diagnostics. If the priority is a minimal launcher, or a specific automatic-update workflow on another platform, compare alternatives before switching.
