World Machine review
A mature procedural terrain tool with deep erosion, water, material, and export workflows.

World Machine is desktop terrain-generation software for technical artists, game developers, and environment creators. Its node-based procedural workflows generate terrain from fractals, simulate erosion and water, create masks and PBR materials, and export heightfields, meshes, textures, and scenes. The current release supports both heightfield and true 3D VDM terrain, including overhangs and cliffs, making it suited to teams producing detailed environments across several game engines and digital content tools.
Pricing follows a freemium model. The Basic edition is free indefinitely for personal, educational, and non-commercial use, with erosion and water simulation, layouts, PBR materials, node graphs, and export formats. The $119 Indie license adds commercial export rights, a perpetual license, and one year of updates. At $299 one-time, Professional adds all available CPU cores, tiled terrains, automation, and macro locking. Studio Site costs $1,999 one-time and adds unlimited workstation installs at one physical location. Commercial teams should account for the license tier required by their export and workstation needs.
Its strongest fit is cross-engine production: documented workflows cover Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Blender, Maya, and Cinema 4D, while outputs include RAW, EXR, TIFF, PNG, TER, OBJ, glTF, and GLB. Reusable macros, seed control, PBR materials, weightmaps, 2D and 3D viewports, and tiled builds support both repeatable iteration and larger terrain projects. It is less suitable for creators who only need a lightweight map editor or who require commercial exports without purchasing a license. Choose World Machine for procedural terrain depth and multi-tool output; consider an alternative when the workflow is limited to simpler, single-engine terrain tasks.
World Machine pros and cons

- Integrates with Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Blender, Maya, and Cinema 4D
- Where it doesn't
- Commercial export requires a paid license
- Advanced tiled and automation workflows start with Professional
- Studio Site pricing is substantially higher than individual licenses
