A free, open-source Windows OTP app with strong portability and local protection.

WinAuth is a free, open-source Windows desktop authenticator for people managing multiple two-factor authentication accounts on a Windows computer. It generates RFC 6238 time-based TOTP codes and counter-based HOTP codes, while supporting multiple authenticators at the same time. The portable application runs without installation, making it a practical fit for users who want to carry an authenticator between Windows environments. It also supports selected service-specific restore features and integrations with services including Steam, Battle.net, Guild Wars 2, RuneScape, SWTOR, and several cryptocurrency exchanges.
Its strongest case is the combination of portability, local control, and account protection. WinAuth stores authenticator data locally in an encrypted file and supports protection through a password, Windows account or machine, or YubiKey. Configurable hotkeys can handle notifications, keyboard input, and clipboard copying. Import and export support includes UriKeyFormat and Authenticator Plus formats, which may help when moving authenticator records between supported tools. These capabilities suit Windows users who prefer a desktop utility rather than a mobile-first authenticator.
The trade-off is a narrow platform and ecosystem fit. WinAuth supports Windows only, and the published feature set centers on local operation rather than synchronization or encrypted backup across devices. Its service coverage is useful but selective, with specific integrations rather than a broad platform ecosystem. The GitHub repository describes the project as having reached the end of its useful life, although releases remain available. Choose WinAuth if portable Windows access, open-source code, and local encrypted storage are priorities. Choose an alternative if you need cross-platform access, synchronized accounts, or an actively evolving project.
