Wii64 / Cube64 review
A flexible, free N64 emulator for Nintendo hardware with broad loading and save options.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Wii64 and Cube64 are open-source Nintendo 64 emulators for Nintendo Wii and GameCube hardware, with a Wii U build designed for Wii mode. They suit users who want to run N64 ROMs on Nintendo hardware rather than on a desktop platform. The project accepts z64, v64, and n64 ROM formats, with loading from SD, USB, and DVD. A Wii U virtual-console build also supports the Wii U GamePad.
Its strongest practical advantage is the range of configuration options. Users can remap controller buttons, choose between interpreter and dynamic-recompiler CPU cores, and select Rice GX or glN64 graphics plugins. Save states can use selectable storage devices, while native game-save support includes automatic save options. The emulator also includes framebuffer features and texture filtering, giving hardware-focused users several ways to adjust how games run and display.
The main trade-off is scope. Wii64 and Cube64 are focused on Nintendo hardware, supporting Wii, GameCube, and Wii U in Wii mode rather than presenting a broad cross-platform emulator setup. High-resolution texture-pack support is experimental, so it is better treated as an optional enhancement than a central feature. The project is a strong fit for Wii, GameCube, or Wii U mode users who value open-source software, flexible ROM loading, controller remapping, and multiple save methods. Users seeking AI features or a wider platform range should choose another emulator.
