Our verdict on Wicked Engine

Wicked Engine is an open-source 3D game engine for developers who want a C++ framework, a standalone editor, or Lua scripting. Its editor supports 3D model editing and in-editor scripting, while the framework uses a static library build workflow. The project targets Windows, Linux, macOS, and iOS, with documented deployment targets also including Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. It is best suited to C++ developers who want direct access to engine code and modern rendering features rather than a primarily visual development environment.

Rendering is the standout area. Wicked Engine supports DirectX 12, Vulkan, and Metal, along with physically based rendering, ray tracing, and path tracing. That foundation is paired with an entity-component system, animation, terrain generation, path finding, and imports for OBJ, FBX, GLTF, GLB, VRM, VRMA, and PLY models. Lua scripting is available through scripts and an in-editor console, giving teams a second development route alongside C++. Support for 3D audio, keyboard, mouse, controller, and touch input also broadens its fit across desktop and mobile projects.

Its feature range extends into rigid-body, soft-body, ragdoll, vehicle, and character physics, UDP networking, and mobile export. The engine is free and open source, with its code distributed under the MIT license. Console deployment is documented, but the console-specific extension files are private, so teams planning console releases should account for that dependency. Choose Wicked Engine for a code-oriented workflow with advanced rendering and broad engine systems. Consider an alternative if your priority is a fully visual authoring experience or a simpler path to console deployment.
