Our verdict on WebPA
WebPA is a self-hosted online peer assessment system for higher-education group work. It is designed for tutors who need students to assess their own and teammates’ contributions through defined forms and criteria. The system combines peer scores with an overall group mark to calculate individual grades using the WebPA scoring algorithm. Students can create groups, while tutors can edit groups manually, define assessment criteria, and choose self-and-peer or peer-only assessments.
Its strongest area is the depth of its group-work marking workflow. Tutors can use Likert-scale or split-100 scoring forms, weight peer-assessment marks, moderate comments and assessment outcomes, and generate reports. Email reminders target students who have not submitted. Forms can be imported and exported, and the published category capabilities include rubric scoring and moderation tools. These features make WebPA a fit for institutions that want configurable assessment rules rather than a narrow peer-feedback tool.
WebPA is distributed under the GNU GPLv3 license and runs on the web through a self-hosted deployment. LTI integration is available, but the standard installation does not include LTI support; a separate connector is required. Loughborough’s support for the project has ended, documentation is archived, and community support is directed to a JISC mailing list. Institutions should choose WebPA when open-source control, configurable scoring, and group-work moderation matter most. Teams seeking a centrally supported service or a simpler hosted rollout should consider an alternative.
