vkmark review
A focused, open-source Vulkan benchmark for Linux graphics testing.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
vkmark is an open-source Vulkan benchmarking suite for measuring graphics performance on Linux systems. It suits developers, system maintainers, and technically oriented users who need a focused graphics workload rather than a cross-platform benchmark product. The suite provides targeted scenes with configurable rendering behavior, alongside a default benchmark suite for a more direct starting point. Its GNU Lesser General Public License 2.1 distribution also makes the source available under an open-source license.
Customization is the product's defining strength. Users can create benchmark sequences with command-line options, adjust scene option values, select a Vulkan device, and choose presentation modes. Output can run fullscreen or at a configurable size, which supports repeatable runs across different display setups. The available window-system backends—X11/XCB, Wayland, and KMS—give vkmark useful flexibility within Linux graphics environments. This makes it a good fit for targeted workloads where control over scenes and execution parameters matters more than a broad catalog of ready-made tests.
The trade-off is a narrow platform and workflow focus. vkmark runs on Linux, and its published build process uses Meson and a C++17 compiler, so setup is oriented toward users comfortable with local compilation and command-line tools. It is better suited to local, configurable benchmarking than to teams seeking a hosted results database, built-in comparison workflows, or an export-oriented reporting layer. Choose vkmark for open-source Vulkan performance checks on Linux; consider an alternative when multi-platform coverage or a more managed analysis workflow is the priority.
