Best for Point and Click Adventures.

I’ve created two complete games with Visionaire Studio, so I’ve used it far beyond just testing a few scenes or building a prototype. For point-and-click adventures, Visionaire is extremely well thought out. A lot of the systems you would otherwise have to build yourself are already there: scenes, hotspots, characters, inventories, item combinations, dialogue systems, animations, localization, sound and scripting. What I especially like is that you can build a surprisingly complex adventure without having to turn everything into a programming project. The visual workflow makes it very fast to create and iterate on scenes, puzzles and interactions. At the same time, Lua scripting and plugins give you enough freedom when you need something more specific. The engine is also clearly built by people who understand adventure games. Many small details that become important during production are already part of the workflow, instead of feeling like features that were added afterwards. Of course, there is a learning curve, especially once a project becomes larger and more complex. Some parts of the interface also take a little time to get used to. But after two games, I still find Visionaire much faster and more practical for this genre than using a general-purpose engine and rebuilding all the adventure-specific systems from scratch. If you want to create a classic or modern point-and-click adventure, Visionaire Studio is a very strong choice.

    Pros
    • Excellent workflow for point-and-click adventures
    • Most adventure-specific systems are already built in
    • Very little programming required
    • Fast scene and puzzle development
    • Multi-platform publishing
    Cons
    • The interface takes some time to learn
    • Larger projects require good organization
    • Some advanced features are less obvious at first
