Our verdict on UNA
UNA is an open-source, self-hosted platform for building online communities, social networks, collaboration hubs, educational portals, and organizational platforms. It combines web and native mobile clients with configurable apps for profiles, organizations, groups, events, discussions, messaging, content, storage, permissions, and administration. Private and secret groups or events support restricted participation, while custom domains and mobile apps extend the platform beyond a basic community website. Its MIT-licensed source code and free Core Apps and Free Apps make UNA a fit for organizations that want control over deployment and customization.
The platform’s breadth is its clearest strength. Administrators can configure apps, modules, pages, and navigation, then manage roles, memberships, permissions, moderation, reporting, and spam controls. Community features cover groups, spaces, posts, discussions, and events, while files, images, video, document storage, messaging, and video calls support broader collaboration needs. AI agents include context memory and vector retrieval. The REST API connects UNA with services such as Shopify, Snipcart, Stripe, PayPal, OneSignal, and AWS S3, giving teams options for commerce, payments, notifications, and storage integrations.
UNA’s pricing structure separates the free open-source core from paid Pro Apps and related services. The Do It Yourself plan includes all Pro Apps, automatic Pro App updates, use on 1 domain, email support, and mobile app publishing. Managed adds managed version updates and use on 2 domains, while Tailored adds use on 3 domains, dedicated project management, and custom development. Organizations should choose UNA when self-hosting, extensibility, mobile delivery, and a wide community feature set matter more than a narrowly focused product. Teams seeking a simpler hosted setup with fewer configuration decisions may prefer an alternative.
