Our verdict on TrueCar

TrueCar is a free online marketplace for shoppers researching used cars from participating dealers. Search listings by make, model, style and price, then use a ZIP code to see location-based results. Certified pre-owned vehicles are included, alongside listings for different vehicle types, brands and cities. The service is suited to people who want to compare dealer inventory and get a sense of pricing before contacting a dealer, rather than complete a purchase entirely online.

Its comparison tools help organize research beyond the listing itself. Vehicle comparisons and rankings provide another way to narrow options, while price ratings reflect mileage, location, options and condition. Loan and lease calculators let shoppers estimate payments. Saved searches support returning to vehicles of interest. These tools make TrueCar a fit for shoppers weighing both vehicle choices and possible financing costs, though estimates and price ratings are research aids rather than a transaction with TrueCar.

The marketplace connects shoppers with participating certified dealers, but TrueCar says it does not itself broker, sell or lease vehicles. That distinction matters: buyers looking for an end-to-end online purchase or delivery process should consider a service that explicitly offers those capabilities. TrueCar is a better match for people comfortable continuing through a dealer connection. Its consumer service has no fee, and its web-only availability suits desktop or mobile browser research, but not shoppers seeking a dedicated app. Overall, choose it to compare dealer listings and estimates; look elsewhere if completing the purchase online is a requirement.
