Triode review

Triode is an internet radio app from The Iconfactory for finding and listening to broadcast stations on Apple devices. It suits listeners who want control over how they discover and play stations, whether searching by genre, name, city, or call letters, or adding a station directly with its URL. The free app is ad-free, and its feature set is oriented toward people who use Apple devices across listening contexts, including iPhone, Mac, and CarPlay.

Its Apple ecosystem fit is a central strength. Favorites sync across devices through iCloud, and Handoff lets listeners continue between iPhone and Mac. CarPlay provides playback controls and recent stations, while Siri Shortcuts can find and control stations. AirPlay 2 support extends playback to compatible destinations. Track and artist information, track history, and an automatic sleep timer with 15-, 30-, 60-, or 120-minute options add useful listening controls. Apple Music and Spotify are also listed alongside these integrations, though the core experience remains broadcast radio rather than a general music library.

The free tier covers listening without ads, but station favorites and high-quality artwork are listed as additions in the Monthly Subscription, Yearly Subscription, and Forever Purchase options. Those paid choices share the same stated additions, so the decision is primarily about how to pay rather than a different feature set. Triode is a good fit for Apple users who value station-level controls, custom URLs, and continuity between devices. It is less suited to listeners who need a cross-platform app or want favorites included in the free experience.
