Our verdict on Tonfotos
Tonfotos is a photo and video cataloging application for families organizing archives spread across computers, external drives, network locations, NAS devices, and cloud-storage folders. It indexes files where they are stored rather than creating an independent cloud copy. Windows, macOS, and Linux are supported, while TonfotosSync can automatically import photos from iOS and Android devices. Face recognition, RAW image viewing, metadata editing, duplicate detection, and search across people, events, tags, dates, locations, folders, albums, and filenames give it a broad organization toolkit.
The licensing structure is straightforward. The Free license has no time limitations and includes the full functionality of the paid version, but limits the number of people on photos and includes anonymous usage statistics. The Personal license costs $59 one time for one user/device, adds a perpetual license, unlimited people in photos, and priority email support. The Family license costs $159 one time for up to five users/devices, with a perpetual license, synchronized people information between users, and installation on different operating systems. This makes the paid tiers mainly about people recognition limits, support, and shared household use rather than removing core cataloging features.
Tonfotos is strongest when a family needs one searchable view across scattered libraries, including RAW files and disconnected locations with offline access to indexed information. Family relationships, family-tree information, favorites, albums, and location browsing add useful context beyond basic folders. TonfotosSync and Telegram are the listed integrations, and the product does not replace a backup service because it does not provide an independent cloud copy.
