Our verdict on Tilesetter

Tilesetter is a desktop tool for generating and editing tile-based game assets on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is aimed at solo developers and small to mid-market teams designing tilesets and maps for multiple game engines. Starting from base and edge images, it can generate smart tilesets, composite tile borders, and create Blob or Wang tilesets. Its map editor adds layers and auto-tiling, giving users a focused workflow for preparing reusable game environments rather than a broad pixel-art creation suite.

The free plan includes automatic compositing plus tileset import and export. The paid plan is listed at $12.99 and adds mixed-border generation, isometric support, map editing and exporting, direct export to Defold, GameMaker Studio 2, Godot, and Unity, custom format exporting, and automatic source reload. Export options also include PNG and JSON. The published plans show the price without specifying whether billing is recurring or one-time, so buyers should evaluate the paid tier primarily by the additional workflow and engine-export capabilities it provides.

Tilesetter’s strongest fit is a production pipeline centered on tilesets, tilemaps, and engine handoff. Direct integrations with four engines reduce format-specific preparation, while custom exports support workflows outside those integrations. The tradeoff is a narrow product scope: it is described as a tileset and map tool, and no animation timeline is listed. Developers who need dedicated animation features or broad core pixel-art editing should choose a separate editor instead. For tileset designers moving assets into several supported engines, Tilesetter offers a focused feature set with a free starting point and a clear paid expansion.
