The Explorer's Friend is a free, MIT-licensed Minecraft server mod/plugin that generates and serves a browser-based topographic world map. It is designed for server owners and communities that want a self-hosted map without requiring players to install a client mod. The server-side map supports Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, Spigot, and Paper, and players access it through a normal web browser. Multiple Minecraft dimensions receive separate map links, making the product a fit for modded servers with more than one world or dimension.
Its strongest area is the combination of live rendering and map context. The map can update from block changes and chunk generation, while full and incremental rendering commands support world-map maintenance. Topographic 2D terrain rendering adds elevation and water-depth shading, giving players more information than a basic location map. Player-position overlays include privacy controls, and persistent markers, banner markers, and custom icons support shared navigation. Claims and Waystones can appear as overlay layers. Ecosystem fit includes Fabric API, FTB Chunks, Open Parties and Claims, GOML/Common Protection API, GriefPrevention, Waystones, and LuckPerms.
The product's self-hosted design gives server owners control over where the map is served, but it also makes server setup and administration part of the experience. The map is delivered through the server-side system and does not provide offline viewing, so it suits communities that access a live server rather than players who need a standalone map viewer. Choose The Explorer's Friend if you want an open-source map with live updates, dimension support, privacy controls, and mod-aware overlays. Consider another option if offline access or a 3D viewing mode is central to your workflow.
