TextAloud is Windows desktop text-to-speech software from NextUp Technologies, LLC. It converts documents, email, webpages, and PDF files into spoken audio, with support for students, struggling readers, people with dyslexia or low vision, writers, and general productivity use. Users can listen to text, follow word and line highlighting, and save speech for portable listening. Optional voices are available in multiple languages and accents.

Pricing is centered on one-time licenses rather than recurring subscriptions. The TextAloud 4 Single User License costs $34.95 one time and is Windows only, with no annual fees or subscriptions. Volume pricing starts at $34.95 for 1–4 licenses, then drops to $31.46 for 5–9, $27.96 for 10–24, $24.47 for 25–49, $20.97 for 50–99, and $17.48 for 100–249. The 250+ volume tier uses a custom quote. These tiers make the product easier to budget for organizations purchasing multiple licenses, while the lack of a free plan keeps the initial evaluation paid.

Its main strength is breadth within a desktop workflow. TextAloud imports TXT, DOC, DOCX, WPD, ODT, PDF, RTF, HTML, and XML files, and supports clipboard, hotkey, drag-and-drop, and Windows Explorer importing. Chrome and Microsoft Word extensions connect it to common reading workflows, while integrations include Pocket, Instapaper, and iTunes. File splitting and batch audio conversion extend its usefulness beyond individual reading sessions. However, the Windows focus and lack of an API limit broader platform or developer use, and commercial users should not select it for business audio production. Choose TextAloud for Windows-based reading, proofreading, and document-to-audio conversion; choose an alternative when cross-platform access, API connectivity, or commercial usage is essential.
