TensorFlow Lite Micro is an open-source, portable C++ inference runtime for deploying TensorFlow Lite machine-learning models on microcontrollers, digital signal processors and other constrained embedded hardware. It is suited to teams and individual developers that need local inference on devices with limited memory, rather than a hosted inference service. Models are compiled into applications and executed on the target device.

The project has no paid tiers: its pricing model is open source, with a free plan, and it is released under the Apache-2.0 license. Deployment is self-hosted, so the implementation lives within your firmware and device build process. The published project includes examples that cover model training, conversion and on-device inference, along with a fully quantized int8 conversion workflow. These materials provide a path from TensorFlow Lite model preparation to embedded execution without introducing a separate hosted platform.

Hardware reach is shaped by its portable library and community-supported board ports, including Arduino and Espressif development boards. Guidance for adding new hardware platforms helps teams adapt the runtime, while the C++ interpreter targets embedded applications directly. The tradeoff is that support is centered on documentation and community channels, and model compatibility is defined by the TensorFlow Lite FlatBuffer (.tflite) format. Choose TensorFlow Lite Micro when microcontroller or DSP inference is the priority and you can manage self-hosted builds; consider another engine when you need hosted deployment or a different model format.

TensorFlow Lite Micro pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Runs TensorFlow Lite models on microcontrollers and DSPs
    • Portable C++ interpreter with guidance for new hardware platforms
    • Quantized int8 workflow and community board ports
  • Where it doesn't
    • Self-hosted deployment requires managing device builds and hardware
    • Support is provided through community channels and documentation
    • Uses TensorFlow Lite FlatBuffer (.tflite) models
