A free terrain-focused project for players who want larger landforms and varied seas.

Tectonic is a free, open-source Minecraft world-generation project for Java Edition players who want a more dramatic Overworld. Available as a data pack or mod, it reshapes terrain into continent-like landmasses and islands, large mountain ranges, and deeper, varied oceans. It also generates underground rivers through mountainous terrain and deep lava tunnels, with canyons, dunes, plateaus, and valleys in selected biomes. Its focus is terrain shaping rather than adding biomes, making it a fit for players who want to change the landscape without choosing a biome-expansion project.
Its loader and ecosystem options are broad: the project lists Data Pack, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt support, and compatibility with Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, Regions Unexplored, and Nature's Spirit. Tectonic is for the Overworld, and its project description says it is designed for singleplayer and server-side use. The mod version includes a configuration interface for changing some terrain-generation options; the data pack and mod formats give players different ways to incorporate the terrain changes into a world. Players looking for new dimensions or biome additions should choose another project, since Tectonic concentrates on reshaping existing terrain.
The project page lists compatibility across Minecraft 1.18.2, 1.19.x, 1.20.x, 1.21.x, and versions 26.1 through 26.3, while stating that issue-fix support is currently for 1.21.1 and 26.1. That distinction matters when choosing a version: broad listed compatibility is not the same as current issue-fix support. Tectonic suits players who prioritize large-scale terrain variety and want a free option with multiple loader formats. Players whose priority is added biomes, generation in other dimensions, or current issue-fix support for a different listed version should look elsewhere.
