TaxCalc Self Assessment is desktop software for UK individuals, sole traders and self-employed taxpayers preparing personal tax returns. It combines guided preparation with an HMRC-style forms view, making it suited to users who want step-by-step help but also need direct control over their return. The software supports Windows, macOS and Linux and files returns online to HMRC.

The published plan is TaxCalc 2026 Individual 6, priced at £42 as a one-time annual licence. It covers up to six SA100 Individual tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year and includes non-resident and supplementary pages. Preparation features include real-time tax calculations, expense, capital-gains and benefits wizards, prior-year data import, and Check & Finish validation before submission. Reports can be exported to PDF, Word and Excel. A Dividend Database add-on is also available. This combination gives users useful coverage for investment income, capital gains and more involved Self Assessment returns, rather than limiting the product to a basic filing flow.

TaxCalc’s main strength is control across supported UK filing scenarios, with HMRC as its stated integration and online filing destination. Its desktop format will appeal to people who prefer installed software and detailed forms, while its Windows, macOS and Linux support broadens computer-platform choice. The trade-off is that it is a paid desktop product with no free plan and no mobile-first workflow. It is also not a strong fit for rental-income cases. Choose TaxCalc if you want guided preparation, forms access, calculations, validation and reporting in one desktop application; consider another option if mobile access, a free plan or rental-income support is central to your decision.
